It is the only chapter that does not begin "in the name of God, most benevolent, ever-merciful."[54] Commentators agree that Muhammad received this revelation in 631, the year before his death, when he had returned to Mecca and was at his strongest.[55] Muhammad bin Ismail al-Bukhari (810-70), compiler of one of the most authoritative collections of the hadith, said that "Ultimatum" was the last chapter revealed to Muhammad[56] although others suggest it might have been penultimate. Regardless, coming at or near the very end of Muhammad's life, "Ultimatum" trumps earlier revelations.

So, at first aggressive fighting was forbidden; it later became permissible (2:190) and subsequently obligatory (9:5).[57] This "verse of the sword" abrogated, canceled, and replaced 124 verses that called for tolerance, compassion, and peace.[58]

The west is not the problem, and we don't need to introspect and blame ourselves for radicals. It's right there in black and white. This is why groups like Al-Queda, ISIS, Taliban do what they do. Why do they keep interpreting the Qur'an the way they do? It's these texts that will create 10,000 more groups just like ISIS after ISIS is gone. Islam is the problem.

Just because a book orders Muslims to do something wrong it doesn't mean they will act on it. The majority of Muslims don't take it literraly because they seek a peaceful life. Islam is more of a problem than Muslims, Muslim extremists like ISIS are more of a problem than Islam.

The trouble with the Qur'an is that no Muslim can (or would want to?) deny one iota of its content and this is for two important reasons:
i. it is a fundamental tenet of Islam that the Qur'an is the uncreated word of God. That is to say that every word, every letter has come direct from God (via the Angel Gabriel and Muhammad of course).

ii. not a word or letter has been changed in the 1,400 odd years since the Prophet received the revelation.

Seriously, what in the world is wrong with some of the people here?
It's interesting that most of the objections to criticism of Islam seem to be based on someone knowing Muslims personally who seem to be nice people and apparently want to wear the hijab etc...
But this is no different to JWs that many people know and like and put on a great outward appearance and have all the right answers so that they do not bring any shame to their religion. It doesn't make them happy or even true believers - just stuck in it with no easy out.
Going out off the house with a cloth bag on your head is unnatural - something no one would ever chose to do on their own (show me non Muslims who do it?!). So claiming they want to is just stupid.
They do it because they feel compelled to do it. They are coerced with threats to do it and to lie to the world about wanting to ... just like we would lie about how great it was being a JW and a blessing not to have to endure birthday celebrations and xmas.
This applies to a whole list of things and practices that are appalling on their own but suddenly accepted on the name of religion.
And these are the moderate Muslims that we know and like. They are trapped in a world that is much harder to leave than JWs and yet many would rather say ' they are happy, stop trying to restrict what their religion can teach '.
I think most Muslims want their religion to be restricted and most moderate Muslim reformers are crying out for help to end the excesses that the faith immerses itself in.
The first step towards reforming something is criticising it and accepting that it may not be as right as out should be.

Thank goodness for the worlds sake, that this is a true statement - for now. The problem is folks like this want to move to foreign lands and force their culture into the laws even though it may be in diametric opposition to western ideals.
