I agree that they should have used 587 and then recacluated to the 1930's. World War II was a major world event. The naming of JW's by Rutherford was pretty much the birth of the organization.
I can't see them going back and retconning it if they are going for a more simple version at this point. They've acknowledge the 100 year anniversary of 1914. It's now time to let it fade away.

I think they'll eventually accept the 587 BCE date for the fall of Jerusalem and shift forward from 1914 to 1934.
Will never happen. So when did Cheese-us come inspect all religious? 1939? What happened then to show evidence of this?
Also since Satan was cast down to earth in 1934, what did he do that it is evident that it happened? Nothing... The connection between 1914 and WWI along with the release of Rutherfraud from prison in 1919 are way too precious to let go.
There is no need to get rid of 1914, they will just stop mentioning it and people will forget.

I used to think they would accept 586 (the date I see most often for the fall of Jerusalem is 586 / 587) which would take you to 1935, which was the big "great crowd" announcement.
But they have pretty much dropped 1935 altogether - it hasn't been mentioned hardly at all for the past 10 or so years.

Separation of Powers
1914 is integral to the hype and thus cannot be changed. It may be marginalized, but changing it means that the organization was never imbued with supernatural, "we know and you don't" capability. The GB flourish because of that date. They thrive on the succession of know-it-alls and thus, "LISTEN (to US) OBEY (US) and be BLESSED (by GOd).

I see no reason to get rid of 1914 as they can just put a spin on it. I am sure the Gentile times calculation has been scrapped but they will just say Satan was cast out of heaven in 1914 and we predicted that for 40 years prior to it happening. Dates based on some interpretation of prophecy have probably seen their day and won't come back again. But they still have 1914 as evidence that they were waiting for something big and knew about it in advance. Any other year such as 1934 has two problems--they weren't preaching about it in advance and nothing monumental happened. 1914 is their ace-in-the-hole especially when they whitewash their true history

The 1914 was only important so long as they needed it to prop up their claims to authority. They don't need that in an emotion/personality based religion like JW.ORG. It's going.
Edit: They are already shifting away from claims of prophetic foreknowledge and keeping on the watch. The current spin is that they were selected by Jesus because they were humble truthseekrs.

As long as they don't muck with the Horn-Blowing in Cedar Point Ohio in 1922 I am still in.
