Atheists do not need a literal Bible to attack. Fine, throw it out. We wish you would. Even throwing out the literalness is a fine start. So where do you draw the line? Was Jesus just a man? Was he born of a virgin like the myth borrowed from false religion? Did he perform actual miracles? Or was that all figurative of a smart guy just like the Buddha? What does the future hold for earth if the Bible is figurative? How do we interpret Revelation, or is that one that doesn't really belong? Why doesn't God just tell us?

This is such a good point. The more allegorical the bible is seen the more atheism is winning this argument.

Some Jews and Christians have long considered the creation account of Genesis as an allegory instead of as historical description,

Somehow I don't think that included the founders of Christianity or the early church

FusionTheism - Atheists WANT the Bible to be interpreted literally so they can have something to attack.

I am an atheist, and it is not that I "WANT the Bible to be interpreted literally". It is that I am not arrogant enough to think I know what God (if he exists) may have meant or is thinking. Instead, I listen to a number of interpretations from theists. What I find is that the number of divergent interpretations (and denominations) leads me to believe that the Bible does not seem to have a clear objective mechanism that can be used to determine what is an allegory and what is not.

Historically, it seems to me that often an idea in the Bible is treated as literal up until the point that science, history, or modernity have left the claim no wiggle room, then "voila", it becomes an allegory. If the Bible is the vehicle for God to communicate with humans, it would seem to me that having it open to interpretation is a recipe for disaster.

So, that begs the question, other than personal interpretation, what exactly is the objective process to determine what should or should not be taken literally, or seriously, or relevant in the Bible?

Atheists WANT the Bible to be interpreted literally so they can have something to attack.

If it's a symbolic parable or allegory, atheists have nothing left to attack.

Have you ever read the babble? It's such a piece of shit, it screams out to be attacked and deserves every attack it gets.

    Here's a passage: Judges 21: 10-24

So they sent twelve thousand warriors to Jabesh-gilead with orders to kill everyone there, including women and children. "This is what you are to do," they said. "Completely destroy all the males and every woman who is not a virgin." Among the residents of Jabesh-gilead they found four hundred young virgins who had never slept with a man, and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh in the land of Canaan.

    Here's another: Numbers 31: 7 - 18

They attacked Midian just as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they killed all the men. All five of the Midianite kings – Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba – died in the battle. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword. Then the Israelite army captured the Midianite women and children and seized their cattle and flocks and all their wealth as plunder. They burned all the towns and villages where the Midianites had lived. After they had gathered the plunder and captives, both people and animals, they brought them all to Moses and Eleazar the priest, and to the whole community of Israel, which was camped on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho.

    Here's my favourite: Deuteronomy 22:28-29

If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.

What kind of an sadistic piece of excrement forces a woman to marry her rapist? Oh, I know, that person that christards call yahoo.

I can come up with lots of other quotes. That shit book is full of stuff like this.

There's no wonder christards are two-faced evil b'stards that raped, murdered and pillaged their way through history - their babble tells them to.

Fusion Theism: It is time for Christians to accept evolution, in my opinion.

I do not believe evolution is the driving force responsible for all the beauty, majesty and genetic order around us.

That is my opinion and am stating it for the record, without debate.

How do you reconcile the Fall of Adam and Eve and subsequent necessity of a messiah with the proven fact through evolutionary genetics that there was never any Adam and Eve, thus no fall, no sin, and no need for Jesus?

Jonathan Drake asked:---I can not. I read the " The 7 [widely traveled] daughters of Eve", watched the PBS program of the man in Central Asia that has the most diverse/ inclusive male genes; So:

The Adam & Eve legend even if endorsed by Jesus and Paul, renders the whole story dubious. It merely demolished the credibility of these two characters and Peter's, since they also endorsed the non-event "flood",

Sorry Frank but reality cares not a whit about your opinion.

Evolution is a fact. You will be much happier when you come to terms with it.

Wilful ignorance is not a reasonable option.

Cofty, you know what I regret? I regret not coming to know you personally. You have a bald honesty mixed with a kindness about you. I do regret not knowing you personally.

    Perhaps some day. ;)

"Reality" is what we want to make of it. "Reality" is here today and gone tomorrow.

I hope we can meet one day Frank.

I'm still going to bash you for saying daft stuff though! ha

Reality is what exists even when we don't believe it.

Cofty, do you believe "reality", as it is known to man, remains the same throughout time?

As for bashing it no longer matters to me so go right ahead! :)
