Another fine example of the violation of civil liberties perpetrated by the Bush Administration / Ashcroft-led Justice Department under the guise of fighting "terror."

Is this not "terror" in itself?

At what point is it acceptable for the American people to allow such actions to be committed against fellow American citizens simply because these people are of Arab descent?

As the article brings out, what makes this any different than the unlawful detainment of thousands of Japanese-Americans during World War II simply because they were of Japanese ethnicity?

Or policemen hiding behind the badge of law enforcement and hosing down African-Americans during the civil rights movement?

Do the words of our founding fathers still apply? Are all men created equal? Is everyone entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?

    Apparently not.

America is going down the toilet.

    Reborn-

Did you read the whole story?

The fact is, those who VIOLATED IMMIGRATION LAWS, OVERSTAYED THEIR VISA'S, OR WANTED FOR CRIMES were the ones detained.

As horrible and evil as the United States is, there still is no place else I would rather live. This country is not going down the toilet. If it were so bad, why is this is the number one destination for so many people from different countries?

No I do not see it as terror. To arrest or detain those who are here illegaly or have not complied with the requirements of the INS or who are involved in criminal acts is a necessary action.

Part of the problem we have now ,is the relaxed way the INS has operated for several years, in not applying the laws and being too accepting of the imigrants lack of keeping up their part of the required steps for visas etc.

Unfortunatly the terror threats are coming from the countries involved and the citizens of that country. It makes sense to concentrate on the people from the countries involved. As well as others, such as some americans who feeled compelled to work with terrorists in attacks on america.

The situation we find ourselves in now is not "business as usual". It requires, that some some things be done that we would rather not do in normal times.

The situations this country and other countries face at this time will not allow us to be "politicly correct" in all things we do.

Doh! Because they can make more MONEY .... jee**z!
And a good number will end up bad-mouthing it too, some of them for good reason.

Not that the founding fathers are too be viewed uncritically either. They are of the class that cruelly, wantonly and unnecessarily destroyed the North American Native American and perpetuated the profound evils of Slavery for a hundred further years, to long after more enlightened nations across the ocean had outlawed it. How does Slavery reconcile with a Constitution and Bill of Rights? Only by defining the "Negro" as being other than Human.

    Nations, schmations... poof.

    PRINCIPLES instead.

Principles that permit, enable and encourage Good people to do Good.

(The wicked will always do wickedly, whether permitted/helped or not).

It is quite evident that you did not actually read the story before becoming outraged about it.

These people were not American citizens. They were, as the article explains, Iranians and other Middle East citizens, who "who do not have permanent resident status in the United States." They had also violated laws while they were here, as freedom96 pointed out.

Bush and his administration would be remiss in the wake of terrorist attacks if they did not take action to remove foreign elements within our country, who originate from the same countries that supported the attacks, who have no status that allows them to be here on a continued basis, and who are violating the laws while they are here. Any country on earth would do the same thing; the countries from which they came would, in many cases, call such people spies and execute them. If the terrorists succeed in destroying America, as they would like, all the freedoms that you are so concerned with preserving will be gone.

Yes, America is going down the toilet - and it's because there are so many among us who are far more concerned about the "rights" of terrorists and criminals than about the continued existence of our nation and people! Perhaps you'll see things differently when there's a mushroom cloud over your town - but, of course, it will be too late then.

I hope my step-dad, Zaia HXXXX, was in the round-up. He moved to California after his divorce from my mother. My mother swears he did not become an American citizen by marrying her, so I hope not. Hopefully the INS will dump his sorry ass back in Iraq.

He came from Iraq in approximately 1981. He met and married my mother in 1982. He beat my mother black & blue. Constantly. He locked himself in the bedroom every evening and jacked off to porno films. He contributed nothing to the household except body hair. He was covered with it (except on his head) and shed like a dog.

When he was physically threatened by me (I said I would cut off his penis) he left. He did have two years at it though. I also told my mother my Latino gang member friends could kill him....I would pay for the hit. She really thought I would go through with it. He was not sure and moved out the day before I moved back from the college dorm....May 4, 1984, my birthday. I could not have gotten a better present.

He was 10 years younger than my mother (she was 40) when they met. He told his family, who he brought over after he was married, that I was my mother's sister. (my mother paid for their airfare)

I really disliked Zaia (or Joe, his American name). I don't care why he left Iraq. He came here for a better life. Found a desperate woman and beat her. I was at college when the beating started and it took me awhile to figure out what was going on. Once I did, I acted.

BTW, he claimed to be a Christian...that is why he left..Saddam had just come into power and was abusing people. Zaia learned from a master.

I hope he gets deported. He was scum.

    Reborn,

So, is it your position then that foriegners who ARE NOT PERMENANT RESIDENTS, be allowed to violate our laws? Seems to me if they'd done this on September 1st 2001 3000 of our Citizens would still be alive.

Either you've midread this, or you are placed in the category of liberal who thinks only the US government can do wrong, but not others.

    US government can do wrong

Yeur, are you saying it can't?

This article upsets me as well. Only because they only rounded up muslims...if you think this isn't going to be a lovely little propganda tool to reinforce the notion that Americans HATE muslims and discriminate against them all the time, you're kidding yourself. This will be enough ammo to feed the minds of young sucide bombers for the next two years.

If the government is now going round up illegal alliens, fine...so be it. But they better go to Florida and round up all Cubans, Hatians, and go to Minneapolis and get rid of any unlicenced Hmong people.

You can't round up one group, say you are only holding those that break the laws, and not make sweeping round ups of ALL illegal immigrants. To me it does seem like the Muslim community is being unfairly targeted.
