Russia is a world power
Fm: right, a big one at that, but as Stalin said, they come and go. Of course Russia could devastate all the small countries, and the world for that matter. but. would it not be better if it lifted its population out of its perennial suffering?
When I was young, the Russian dominated half of my home town had 20% the living standard of the western side. Even after 75 years, that discrepancy has not gone away.
Now the empire wants to impose their system on the world again, little country by little country.
own Bolshoi should be enough, and all the little ones say: enough please.
They do not want victory over Russia, just the bear to fix its problems first.

@slim a first strike policy is not them attacking countries...NATO has never instigated any military action...that's the point. To say Russia was provoked is madness.
Russia may "feel" provoked sure but that is faulty logic given they are batshit crazy. NATO expansion in Europe has been directly influenced BY Russia BECAUSE of their actions.

The "NATO expansion" narrative is totally moronic and ridiculous.
First, Ukraine never had real prospects of joining NATO.
Secondly, NATO would not have any significant military infrastructure in Eastern Europe if not for the Russian aggression. And even the Bundeswehr has virtually ceased to exist, it's not a real military force anymore. Russia itself revitalizes NATO and pushes even countries like Finland and Sweden - that embraced neutrality for decades - to join the Alliance.
And thirdly, when the mentioned Northern nations - which are also Russia's neighbours - decided to become NATO members, the Kremlin showed virtually no reaction. Because it doesn't consider the "NATO expansion" to be a real threatExactly my point, well put.

the reality is NATO is not a military force that attacks first - this is factually incorrect.
In the mid-1990s NATO bombed Serbia, even though Serbia didn't attack a NATO country.

We are talking about hostile blockades of nearby countries (Cuba), instigating violent coups against elected leaders (Chile, Venezuela and elsewhere), wars of aggression under false pretences (Iraq), use of military to grab resources of other countries (Iraq, Libya, Syria, elsewhere), interfering in internal affairs of other countries including bombing, funding, military training, agitation, etc. (Serbia, Ukraine, China, and many other countries). The United States president sits down every week (Obama did it on a Tuesday morning) and decides on a list of people to kill with drones in various countries including but not confined to Yemen, Afghanistan, and Somalia. These drones often hit civilians who were not the intended targets including wedding parties and groups of children. It is estimated that a million people died in the war of aggression against Iraq in 2003 alone. The town of Fallujah was hit with depleted uranium weapons and children are still getting sick from the radiation.

I can see Ukraine ending up in a similar position as Finland occupied during the Cold War.
ie. Independent as to its own internal affairs, but answerable to Russia as to all its foreign policy matters - and in the process, having surrendered a significant area of its territory.

slimboyfat, the crimes that the USA have done in modern times are drastically less evil than those perpetrated by the U.S.S.R./Russia in modern times! In contrast, many (if not most) of the military actions of the USA were at least done with UN Security Council authorization.
Russia's current attempt to annex portions of Ukraine by referendums held at gunpoint in Ukraine are criminal acts (under both Ukrainian law and under international law)!
