Email I think you missed the point - Pleasuredomes reply was in the extreme but it made the point people cant start posting ribbons etc supporting something and then start kicking up a fuss when someone else posts something supporting an opposing viewpoint
I do not find it offensive that people post Yellow Ribbons, but I certainly do not agree with it and will not post one or wear one myself. I pray that every single troop over there dodges every single bullet and avoids killing others and makes it back alive, but I do NOT support the troops. How can I support the troops when they are fighting a war that I do not agree with? I do not support their actions by any means, but that does not mean that I want them to die...I want them to come home.
simon-
i will add this (after reading pleasures post).....you do have posters on this site willing to make your points for you, regardless of my opinions (or anyone elses). im not sure if these ideas wouldve sprung up or not, had this issue not been made from the start....but now that its an issue, your stance is completely validated by others.

This is an interesting thread for me, I since I once posted that IMHO that political banners didn't belong on a discussion board about JW's...........
And i was bashed for 3 pages, with the end result being that it was Simons board, and he didn't have a problem with it ( posting political banners)*remember Daniel Haase's red socialist party flag???*
now all the sudden a yellow ribbon is offencive, but a red ribbon wasnt'???
Wow ... Jun 02 ... you have a much better memory than I do !
Given the problems that all these flags and logos cause, doesn't it prove my point that because they are likely to cause offense to someon, even if we personally find them inoffensive, that the best thing all round would be to not have them?
Wouldn't that be fair?

If Simon had not said anything at the start, Consider this senario :
People would have been posting them all over the place. Next an anti-war poster would put something up the others find offensive (like has happened with the altered flag), Simon would be pressured to take it down. The anti-war poster would then say "how come I cant have my symbol and yet they can post theirs all over the place" (fair point). So Simon (being the diplomatic person he is ) would maybe suggest taking every symbol down. Next the yellow ribbon people are shouting "well you were ok with it until someone who shares your view of the war complained - YOUR BIASED"
This is what Simon was trying to avoid at the start.

i realize what simon was trying to do, and i already said i dont think he had bad motives. i just think you can plant an idea, and then watch it explode. the yellow ribbon was clearly defined by email before anyone started posting it, and it was defined in a way that i believe left no possible chance for anyone to be offended by it. but, even with this definition, if you then reply by saying "this might make the antiwar posters put up their own symbols", guess what? they read it and say "good idea". self-fulfilling prophesy. would the antiwar posters have ever "countered" with symbols on their own? its possible i guess, we will never know.
i noticed on the other thread that you added "flags" to the list of offensive symbols that are "in your face". this sounds like it could get out of hand pretty quick, if we are now stating that even supporting our own countries with a symbol is "offensive". simon has never, in the past, objected to political symbols (as the threads he just posted show), and now we are being told "this is not a political forum", and please refrain from posting political symbols. i think its tough when you start censoring what may or may not offend someone. personally, i find it offensive when simon claims that showing support with ribbons is just a worthless gesture, but i dont think his words should be censored because of it. oh well, i said i wasnt interseted in carrying on about this, yet im still here, so i should digress.

I can't agree with you more dubla...
<sigh>
(no Yellow Ribbon on this post... hope this make all the anti-war people happy)
I just posted on this thread... and didn't put the Yellow Ribbon like i suggested I would do... right after I posted it... I REALLY FELT just like the JW days... where you couldn't discuss, show or say what you thought because you then started to fear what the Elders or the "higher powers" could say or do to you... It's a shame that we have come to this point... again.
<sigh>
(no yellow ribbon displayed... happy?)
