In the language in which the gospel of John was written there was no distinction between upper and lower case so the distinctions you see in English are entirely at the discretion of the translator. If we were to write the English equivalent of the original it would be :

    INTHEBEGINNINGTHEWORDWASANDTHEWORDWASWITHTHEGODANDTHEWORDWASGOD

That's quite difficult to read, especially if the whole Bible is like that. But have you considered the subtle interpretation the KJV and many other translations give to this verse in capitalising the "god" that the Word was. Consider these four different ways of writing verse one and it may help to answer your question:

In the beginning the Word was, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

In the beginning the Word was, and the Word was with God, and the Word was god.

In the beginning the Word was, and the Word was with god, and the Word was God.

In the beginning the Word was, and the Word was with god, and the Word was god.

I'm not trying to offend anyone by asking questions, but I really want answers to my questions from Jehovah's witnesses. Ok, I've been having a problem with John 1:1. How many Gods are there?

Check your NWI (I don’t call it NWT, because it is not a true translation, but an *interpretation* changed and suited to their doctrines) in their notes for Exodus 1:1. It will explain to you that the true meaning of “god” should be “gods” (plural). The Jews were polytheists until the 6 th century BCE when they came under the Zoroastrian influence and their “law” was rewritten and “found”. They claim that this is a “majestatic” plural, but in fact, this plural only came to be used around 50 BCE in by Julius Cesar.

We all know there is one God , right?

Nope, I do not know if there is a god, or many gods. In my opinion if there is a god, She does not care about humans.

There is no doubt about that. Answer me this though, according to your doctrine, is Jesus a false God or a true God, because your corrupted translation clearly says he was "a god"

You missed “the only god”. By your definition, you seem to be polytheistic. Your question should’ve read: is Jesus the true God, a false God or a true God,

Wow, this is really really sad. ONE person answered my question. I need to set some thing straight first. I do want an answer. I am not trying to avoid an answer. I don't wanna waste my time with useless stuff when I just want a simple direct answer if he is a true God or a False God. Gamaliel actually answered my question. Now I don't know if he/she is a Jehovah's witness , but Gamaliel said Jesus was a true God. That means there is more than one God and that goes against all Jehovah's Witness's beliefs. And the reason why I posted this twice is because the first time I posted it, my computer froze and I wasn't even sure if it posted. Are you happy? I don't know why people keep on saying that he is a lesser God. That doesn't answer my question one bit. And yes, wild horses did give me some good information, I just really don't have enough time to read it. I am not trying to avoid an answer I just want a simple direct answer from a Jehovah's Witness. And one more thing, don't go off topic of my question "Is Jesus a true God or a False God." That seems to me that you are trying to avoid giving me an answer. Gamaliel said he is a true God. Now, I wanna know. If he is a true God, that means there is more than one God. That definitely isn't a belief of a Jehovah's Witness.

Yes it IS a belief of JW's. They believe Jesus is A god. Not the almighty.

    Thanks,

    Exactly Integ...

Jws believe there are many gods and only one true Almighty God (with a capital G.) So they believe that Jesus is a lesser true god, but not Almighty God. In fact they believe Satan is a god as well, as he is the god of this system of things. So you are wrong in your opinion on JW beliefs "real truth."

    The Real Truth-

People are answering your question on both of the threads you started. JWs believe that Jesus is a (lesser) true god. To qualify as a god, doesn't take much though. Basically, all you have to do is be worshipped in order to be considered a god. I am a god to some people . No but seriously, have you even read any threads on this site. You appear to be thinking that we are JWs. Here's a reality check for ya: we are all (99.9%) EX-JWs.

IMHO Jesus was a great man, nothing supernatural was involved.

    the real truth,

I can't tell if you figured out yet that there are very few JWs on this board. I am not one, although I was for half my life. The JW religion manages to control one's life in such a way that the even the experience of getting free is something we'd like to talk about for the rest of our lives. In most cases the religion still manages to control our friends so that they believe they have become our enemies when we leave. In many cases it still controls our relatives, even our mothers and fathers, in some cases so that they shun their own children.

It is due to such issues that this board for discussing JW issues exists. True, current JWs rarely open their beliefs to the scrutiny of those who have seen through them. It's a survival response to hate the exposure, because deep down, they know that their beliefs are not rational. A few haven't figured that out yet, but most any JW who truly looks into his or her own beliefs will see them to be irrational, but will usually stop short of thinking or researching their own religion because they fear their own doubts. Doubting means spiritual death, and spiritual death means eternal physical death at God's tiem of judgment. You can't really blame them for not thinking about contradictions in their own religion. What you can blame them for is the fact that they spend so much time criticizing other religions and congratulating themselves continually on having the best and only true one.

By the way, many Christians also contradict themselves on the multiple Gods issue. They say they only believe in One True God, but many of them also believe in Three True Gods. In some ways the JW belief is just as rational. They do believe in multiple true gods, just as Trinitarian Christians do. They even apply the scripture in Isaiah to Jesus, that says Jesus (prophetically) will be called Mighty God, and the capital G doesn't bother them. (Calling him Almighty God, would bother them.)

Understand, too, that lots of us will get annoyed at pretentious screen names like "Gamaliel" "Jesus Christ" and "the real truth".

    Enjoy,

    Gamaliel

The real truth ------- I think your first mistake was asking for a practicing jw to answer the question as the WT has banned the web exept for their own site which is watchtower.org .They believe that jesus was the messiah and GODs appointed king . They do not believe in worshipping jesus but that jesus is a mediator between GOD and man .The bible however says it is ok to worship jesus and that he was given all authority in heaven and on earth after his resurection . The angels are shown worshipping him in revelation .

    Dear Sir ,

Jehovah's Witnesses believe that according to John 1:1 "the logos" is said to be with "God", Grk. "ton theon." As such, since he is referred to as "theos" in John 1:1c he must be "another god", other than the one with whom he is with. Your theory presumes that the Bible teaches that there is but "one God" and that all others are to be classified as "false." However, Jehovah's Witnesses feel that the Bible teaches a slight variation of that. Something more in line with Origen's theology, namely that "The Father alone has no origin and that he is not even generated. He is what is called auto theos, God by Himself, while the Son is God by means of the Father. The Son is the copy or essence or nature of God, but not God Himself (Heb 1:3). If you note this interpreation allows for others to be "called" "God", and can be rightly referred to as a "true God" in the sense that the father, has allowed this to be. There is no equality between Jehovah and Jesus because the scriptures clearly show that Christ was dependent upon the father (John 8), that all powerful works and miracles Jesus performed were by the power of God (Acts 10), his resurrection occurred by means of the father (Galatians 1:1), the father is in fact his God (Micah 5:4, John 20:17, Ephesians 1:3, Revelation 3:12), and all he does has been because he was given the authority to do so by the father (Matthew 28, Acts 5:31)

    Hope this helps.

If that is the case, you had better be careful. The JW's are looking for people just like yourself. Someone who is unwilling to do his/her research.

I'm not trying to be bitchy in saying that. It's just a fact, they want yes men who will take them at their word, or that which is written in their publications. Take time to read the information that is out there for you. It might just save you a lot of heartache one day.
