I may go to Canada although I don't think they have any decent beer there.

I would have to argue that myself . The canadian beer they sell in the US is crap compared to Budweiser but compared to european beer budweiser is substandard it doesn't have the alchohol content of some european beers .

I vote for Canadian Beer! However Mexico does have an excellent dark beer Negro Moldero (sp?) and the winters are much nicer there. Yet Canada is only 2 years behind the US whereas Mexico is 9

As for NK, let's not forget China is right behind them. Giving them food and forgetaboutit plan doesn't work. We've 'fought' NK in simulated combat (US Army III Corps Warfighters training exercises in Ft. Hood - mid 90's) and have our %$#'s handed to us. All Big Brother China has to do is send in their Army. We're toast at that point and it really doesn't matter about the nukes only because it's more expensive to clean up and de-contaminate than other bombs. Let's face it - the only reason we have bases in SK and Japan is to keep China in check.

It is really a two-fold problem. The first issue is the fear that NK may produce nukes to give them to terrorist to ship and then detonate here. As far as giving nukes to terrorist organizations, this could eventually be a real threat, America is going to have to figure out some way to guard against this, through 100% container checks or whatever it takes, we need to solve this before it becomes a legitimate problem. We might be able to stop new countries from developing nukes but we will never be able to stop countries from making WMD. Chemical weapons are produced almost exactly like farming pesticides, and Biological weapons can be produced in a small lab with dual use technology. Basically, the key is to develop a defense now. Back to NK, the key to controlling NK and their nuke program is China. China owns these guys and China does not want a bunch of nukes floating around anymore than we do, remember we buy the stuff they make. Lean on China through economic means, the pressure will flow into NK.

The second problem is NK expansionism. This really isn’t as big as a problem as some might think. The only country threatened by NK is SK. They will not attack China, and China will not let them attack Taiwan; they are saving that apple for themselves. The minute NK begins to show expansionist tendencies Japan will have more nukes than you can shake a stick at; even that crazy NK dictator does not want a piece of that. I think American troops should phase out of SK though for two reasons. One, many SKs don’t seem to want us their and two, SK economy is 26 times the size of NK. SK can and should defend itself.

My inclination right now, would be to make no deals, Clinton made a deal with them and they ignored it while they proceeded to keep building the nuclear program.

Clinton made the "wrong" deal; and the US has reneged on the important terms of that deal, the tems important to the North Koreans.

    I don't think NK is a threat.

They have armed themselves, true, but it is based on their belief that America are aggressors and they are all geared up for defence.

I hope George W. is not dumb enough to go up against NK because I think the USA would get one hell of a bloody nose. This is not Afghanistan or Iraq, this is a country where everyone is trained, where all the roads have inbuilt tank-traps and they have been ready and waiting for the US invasion for the last 20 years.

    How to handle them? TALK

Stop making cowboy threats Mr Bush and using silly comic book names and treat them like real people. At the moment they are being demonised like the Russians used to be.

Simon does have a point . I remember the Bush administration announcing that North Korea was part of an axis of evil so I wouldn't expect too much talk on the issue of aid .If they want aid they need to realize that threats will get you no where . They will certainly not get what they want by aiding terror in the world.

I think we should be careful of using what Bush says as evidence or reason for military action. Surely we've been burnt by that enough?

Is there any evidence that NK is aggresive and trying to expand? Think carefully about your answer and how whatever criteria would also apply to the USA.

Do you really need to go to war with them? Are they really a threat to us? Are they funding terrorism?

    I don't think so.

I do think it would be dangerous to go prodding them with a stick though and threatening them.

A few guys in the dessert have shown that overwhelming military force does not mean everything against a determined opposition. Afghanistan and Iraq are far from over as it is. NK has a big arsenal and a highly trained and disciplined force. If anything was started then I would not be surprised if there were tens or hundreds of thousands of casualtes. Either that or allies start using nuclear weapons and either way, we have lost.

And yet the 'best' time for NK to move in on SK is now, while the US is busy elsewhere. Is China supporting NK? I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to 'unite' Korea once again. Just a few thoughts....
