    I just want to point out that it's a generalization to claim that the whole bible is silly, based on individual stories therein.

    Talking snake + Eve eats apple + Sins of Adam transferred to mankind + Angels and women copulate to produce giants + Noah’s flood + Jonah + Moses parts Red sea + Jesus born of a virgin + Jesus’ miracles + Jesus dying to cancel Adams sin + many many more fables = the whole bible is silly

    silly isnt the word I would use.

    I can invalidate the whole thing in three scriptures.(Kinda like I can name that tune in three notes...)

    point:

    OT: The Lord your God is a Jealous God....yada yada yada

    counterpoint:

    NT: God is Love.

    clincher:

    1Corinthians 13--LOVE IS NOT JEALOUS

    I rest my case.

    Just like sevenoo6 was asked.

    Do you really and honestly believe, that the whole world is in a world of #hit, because a talking snake, told a naked woman, to eat a piece of fruit?

    I will never forget this statement, till I'm on my death bed, I will never forget this. As a matter of fact, this is the next question I will ask a jw, when they come to my door again.

    Little Toe;

    I just want to point out that it's a generalization to claim that the whole bible is silly, based on individual stories therein.

    Yes Little Toe, Jesus said some nice things. But it's silly that the credibility of any claims regarding Jesus being anything other than a man who said nice things - like Ghandi or Martin Luther King - is undermined by the way the Bible is obviously a flawed and inaccurate book when it comes to describing our origins and what are meant to be major events in man's history (Creation, The Garden, the Flood, Babel).

    This lack of reliability makes, to me, any claim that God would entrust his message to man to such a comprimised book, very, very silly.

    It's like saying that BMW would publish a book full of inaccuarte information as a handbook for one of their cars.

    It's another baby and bathwater thread, and I want to take my toys and play elsewhere, thank you very much!!!

    To quote St, Funky of the Derrick;

    "I checked the bathwater; there was no baby in it".

    obiwan;

    Hate to break this to you but the first photo wasn't taken from space; check the page, the caption reads;

    An image from the June 19, 1949 U.S. Air Force Mission that captured a panoramic
    view of what is simply called "the Ararat Anomaly".

    The second one, which I think could fairly be described as 'inconclusive', is from the IKONOS.

    Just as with the Loch Ness monster, despite an awful lot of belief from various quarters, the Ark has failed to materialise. One can engage in a plethora of blurry photos - hell, here's the URL of an Italian JW who says he's found it.

    http://www.noahsark.it/

    I think that looking for wooden structure that has lain exposed on a mountain side (not particulary high mountains at that - under 5,000m) for over 4,000 years is something approaching a fool's errand.

    As you rightly say, the story of the Flood in the Bible has holes in it, but every element of that story is silly unless you are willing to accept that such stories of global deluges are distorted local events. There is no physical evidence for a global flood, either in terms of the signs one would expect from such a deluge, or the genetic evidence such as has been pointed out already. The Ark would not have been practical constructed as described in terms of payload, feed for the animals, waste products for the animals, or even ventilation of the interior. There is physical evidence showing there was no global flood, in the form of trees that were standing before and after the flood. And, as this thread comments and as other posters have elaborated, the removal of the prohibition against eating meat at that point is illogical to an extreme, and if no matter whether one believes animals ate meat before the flood or only afterwards, the question of how carnivores did not eat their prey animals extinct before they had bred is a very good one.

    As such, the likilhood that whatever is on Arafat is THE Ark is low, as all the other indications point to the story being fictional.

    Yeru: How do you know which bits of the Bible are spiritual truths? If the stuff you can check the validity of comes up as wanting as the Flood story, or is just simply something one can have no closure over regarding the accuracy of the story, how do you know the minute the Bible starts talking about spiritual things it stops being man-made and flawed?

    1. ALL writers, whether of fiction or non-fiction, including historical tomes, consistently and persistently, are KNOWN to embellish their written prose according to their own prejudices and whims.

    2. The first writer of the wholey scriptures began to record the alleged history of mankind exactly HOW many centuries after its supposedly began (?) thus he could have only gleaned his pseudo-facts based on lore passed down by word of mouth through generations of unenlightened.....men...and the probability that the first writer was a man raised in a wealthy and thus enlightened clime...gives little credibility to the idea that he actually "bought" what was told to him, as passed down through generations of slaves....

    3. A supposedly all-wise, all-knowing, loving deity would NOT have authored even the first ten commandments attributed to it in the wholey scriptures....for most of them center on a deity's mega-maniacally egotistic demands to be worshipped exclusively, and inanely include commandments not to covet (AS IF! ), not to engrave images, which would INCLUDE EVEN the printed word (!!!!!) and yet another commandment frees everyone from labor in worship of this deity one day a week....everyone, that is, with the exception of the wife...the woman...she's not mentioned as being free from labor on that day....everyone ELSE is...ya think a deity wouldn't realize it'd step in some deep doo-doo on that one? HUH? ANNNND....there is no mention anywhere, even in the multitude of commandments added to the original ten, of ordinances against child neglect or abuse...or molestation....nor ordinances against illicit drug useage or terrorism, to name a few that would be pertinent in today's world....

    4. The last book in the wholey scriptures are based entirely on a man's dream (nightmare)....and taken as gospel.....what was he "on"....payote? (sic)

    The bible has jesus saying some nice things, then it has him saying some not so nice things that are out of the nice character. For instance, he says that when he becomes king, he will have his angels exterminate all those who didn't want him to be king.

    ***

    Rbi8 Luke 19:26-27 ***

    . 27 Moreover, these enemies of mine that did not want me to become king over them BRING here and slaughter them before me.’

    Doesn't that clash w jesus nice sayings; turn the other cheek, love your enemies, treat them like you want to be treated??

    Well if you're going to believe the story of Noah and the ark, how do you explain all those strange animals that ended up in Australia and no where else. ( referring to the furry mammals, not Prisca, Refiners Fire, m0nk3y, Uncle Bruce etc)

    2 Arks and 2 Noah's?

  • Hamas
    Hamas

    They claim to have found remnants of the Ark resting in Turkey...

    They claim to have evidence of biblical events thanks to archeology....

    As one famous digger said...

    ' They dig with their spade in one hand, and their bible in the next'

    They find something.... 'HEY ! WE GOT PROOF THE BIBLE IS TRUE !'

    2+2 does not equal 5.

    I personally believe that the Bible, especially things like the flood, the Garden of Eden, and the long and detailed descriptions of God in it, serve as an excellent example of how and why people believe nonsense and even worse, allow themselves to be victimized and manipulated by others who use these deleterious memeplexes for their own ends. In that regard, the Bible and many other religious books are useful in showing us what to avoid: religion in general.

    Abaddon, I thought you made a good point about the animals. I remember back in college examining my prior JW beliefs, including the flood fable and was able to come up with nearly 50 reasons why it was impossible. Even more interesting to me in disproving the whole Bible as nothing more than ancient propoganda was that Jesus (or the supposed character who is the Jesus in the Bible) made reference to it, so he was infected with a mind virus too. When I took the additional steps at discrediting the creative days myth, and looked at the overwhelming evidence for the process of evolution, it showed me there was no need for any Christ to redeem mankind and thus no need for salvation through the Bible based belief systems.

    In fact, if the Bible were true, it would be showing wisdom that would turn traditional Christian teachings upside down. Sex would be celebrated as a wonderful part of life for all to enjoy (with pictures) ; the dangerous of swallowing any beliefs without rigorus testing would be encouraged: a realistic assessment of human weaknesses and strategies to overcome them would be plain for all to see; practical information to avoid the very real dangers of disease would be spelled out, and the slogan "BEWARE OF STUPID PEOPLE IN LARGE GROUPS" would be the theme of the coolest book on the planet.
