George Washington
He gave up what was basically an offer by the British Empire to be the Emporer of america. He declined, and beat the hell out of the 1700s Brits. He showed guts, resolve, and gave serious respect to a fledgling country. Besides that, he instituted a tradition of the two term limit, which was ratified in 1942 if I remember right.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Franklin D. Roosevelt. Wither you agree with him or not he took America through the darkest moments of the great depression and WW2, was elected 4 times and served longer than any other president.
