Three possibilities
1. We will enhance and control our evolution eventually becoming immortal all-powerful gods.
2. We will destroy ourselves.
3. The Universe will destroy us.
I say we've got a one in three chance of making it to the next millenium intact.

This is what concerns me.

NOTES
US warhead estimates exclude a small number of warheads awaiting dismantlement and are accurate to within a few hundred warheads.
SU/Russian warhead estimates exclude warheads awaiting dismantlement or in reserve status. The total number of intact warheads is estimated to be 18,000.
UK and French stockpile estimates are believed to be accurate to within a few tens of warheads.
Chinese warhead estimates are probably not accurate to better than 50 percent, due to the uncertainty in the number of tactical warheads.
In addition to the above, Israel, India and Pakistan have nuclear arsenals, and South Africa produced six gun-assembly type weapons in the 1980s, but dismantled them in the early-1990s. Estimates of the composition and evolution of the arsenals of Israel, India and Pakistan are extremely difficult to make. Israel may have a stockpile of some 100-200 nuclear weapons, India 30-35, and Pakistan between 24 and 48 nuclear weapons.

This does not include North Korea which now has nukes, or Iran that is developing them(regardless what they say). The chances of one of these getting into terrorist hands is too high. Where there is a will, there is a way....I think it is only a matter of time, and I just hope that it will be an isolated incident and will not result into an all out global nuclear war. We are too smart for that, aren't we?

Since stars are dying all the time and new ones are being reborn, I suppose our sun would die out eventually. There seems to be a cycle of life and death in everything. The weather, things wearing out, living things......so in that aspect I can see humans being the same way..but perhaps being reborn with no memory of our past life? Maybe that is true, but if it isn't, what of humans? Since I love science fiction, I would love to think that space travel would be in our future, and there would be another planet to inhabit. Maybe there are yet undiscovered wormholes (like on Stargate) that we can just step thru a portal and find ourselves somewhere else.
I have doubts the society has no idea what they're talking about, since they aren't scientists anyway, when they say there is no life on any other planet. Did God give them that information? I believe there might be life elsewhere, where the people didn't mess up so God had to fix things......OR maybe we are the beginning of people on other planets. We messed up, God will fix it, and we will know how to deal with and help other humans? on other planets when they are created...??? This is just all speculation, of course, but that's where my mind goes when I think about things like this.

Is it not easier to accept that the relativity of time as a constant, and space as equally infinite, is unmeasurable and un-quantifiable? Its playground stuff like what is the highest number?
Absolutely. Far, far easier. That doesn't make it correct though. Sometimes the easiest answer isn't the correct one.

I don't think you did either, SS.

In reality, all we have is the scientists' theoretical evaluation of the status of the universe and it will be in the millions of years. In the meantime, man will have found a way to get the inhabitants off this planet and head for a destination somewhere in the universe which they have not as yet discovered. By then, all the belief systems will be more well defined and will probably no longer exist as we know them today.

All creatures have an instinctual fear of death and try to escape when confronted with it. Humans are unique in that we can visualise our own death in the future. The despair we feel is that fight or flight emotion kicking in over something we cant control yet. Its just a glitch in the programming. It's the price we pay for having a large frontal lobe that can conceptualise abstract things like 'future'.
