and also (major rant building here) at one time my team had to pretend they were in Chicago so that consumers who called thought they were actually reaching Q. headquarters. They actually had to be briefed each day on the weather and local events in Chicago. Had I been required to do the same, I would have quit on the spot. I will not pretend or lie to people even if it means I don't work. Period. I never lie to my consumers; ever. I don't see how anyone in good conscience can pretend to be something they are not. Then again, I am not trying to get out of some hovel in Calcutta, so I guess my words and values are meaningless.

interesting article,
life is funny it is often said that folks don't become concerned unless their OX is being gord-
it is very hard many times to garner support for issues like this so many times, i see it here in the USA
if folks are told company X charges $5 amonth for service and company Z charges $9 a month most consumer would go with company X even if they are told the their employess are in a third would country being paid cheap labor-
look at Nike most folks know that the avg little lady sewing Air Jordans is not pulling down 80,000 a year, and they could care less if they have to pay $150 for the shoes
if consumer have 2 choices
1. a wonderful unionized company charging top dollar for their goods and services
or
1 a wonderful company with Indian workers charging 25% less
who do you think the vast majority will go with, of course the don't see or care about the impact on others job since it ain't their Ox being Gord
where will this lead us to will be interesting to say the least

JT, I always shopped in Maple Shade local businesses even though I paid more money because I wanted to support the local business.
Yes, I would pay more for goods made here and services provided by persons of any nationality who actually live here.

btw JT, you are one of the most helpful and sincere persons here....you offered to help me more than once. Thanks for PMing me your email address. Can you do so again, please? That is , if I haven't hurt your feelings. This whole India thing really upsets me. I am certainly not without deep sympathy for the people there, but if they take away those sorts of jobs, what will the uneducated among us do until we can get real skills? In my case, recovering from a bad "illness", it's difficult to find anything not too challenging until I get better. I have nothing against working at McDonalds, but 6.00 an hour just doesn't cut it.
My self-taught "skill" is office management, executive assistant, etc. I dont feel up to that right now; and others will never be up to that. What will we do when the jobs are gone?

This is why I think giving in too much to big business does not really benefit people or the economy ... it only benefits big business.
Do they care if the person on the end of your phone doesn't know the place you are talking about? No ... as long as they have your money anyway. The Directory Enquiries in the UK has been split up and now you may be sent to someone in India with 'fake UK voice'. Of course, they don't know that there is a major difference between Manchester City Football club and Manchester United. They are trained in the customs and habits of the UK, what tv programmes are on etc ...
IT and call centres are the first ones to go because they are the easiest to transfer.

According to Kent Brockman, unnamed sources in Springfield tell us that Apu is thinking about retiring from the Kwik-E Mart and going home to India to work in a call center.

I have heard that most of the "online/chat" support you get is already in India. They say that this solves the problem of the accent that cannot be understood since they are typing the messages instead of speaking. Indians usually have a good grasp of english theory... but it's the accent that kills them. Doing online/chat support also allows a single rep to handle multiple customers at a time.

Worse yet: some companies with AMERICAN in their name are doing this. I understand that AMEX & AT&T are among that crew. They should change their names...
Time for a boycotting campaign. Insist on finding out where the other end of the phone conversations is...
