Violence against women is common among the poor and uneducated, many of whom live in feudal societies. - news article about acid burnings

I didn't know about this. Gruesome crimes.

Women have always been an easy target - particularily "among the poor and uneducated." Throw in religion...and it gets worse sometimes. Children too.

In China? Baby girls have been left "on the other side of the hill" for centuries. Little value, another mouth to feed and a dowry. Girls move away & get married. Sons will help the family more. When it came down to having only two children......many parents didn't want to *waste* a child just for a female.

I didn't know about India. What a horrible shame. And such a horrible way to die. What? Do the in-laws just sit around and watch the female scream and burn to death?

As for the acid victims........I can't imagine the pain - for the rest of their lives.

This is not an pro-choice/anti-abortion issue. It is a human rights issue. Please do not confuse them

There are some great comments so far, I wish I saw this subject earlier. This is a subject near and dear to my heart as I am feminist and keeping up with the human rights violations in those areas. Reading this is not new news, but it hurts me nevertheless.

He is talking about the outscourcing companies picking up and taking their business to India. (telemarketing, cust. service, tech support, etc.)
Although, I do not see the connection. Dowry deaths have been going on for a very long time, in addition to honor killings, etc.

For ME (not necessarily YOU) it is tough to feel much sympathy for a culture that is taking away our jobs.

Donkey-US business are moving the jobs...India is not taking them. It is the Exec's at the company that is to blame. India is just a good source of cheap labor, as is Mexico and Pakistan, other countries that those jobs are being exported to. Something has to be done in the US to keep those jobs here.

Jess is right. This isn't about jobs and it even isn't about abortion. I'm pro-life yet I wouldn't think about making that argument in this thread. It's about human rights.

I am not expressing any arguments - just a lack of sympathy.
