Good responses, I agree about the alcoholic being responsible for themselves.

Just a cautionary comment though about suggesting the use of NON ALCOHOLIC beer....DON'T buy it.

Read the label...most NA beer has a small amount of alcohol, and that would be disastrous for the A.

Also...in my experience...the A who still likes the taste of beer....is heading for a fall, and NA beer just speeds up the process. Just my opinion.

My husband drinks NA beer and we hear this all the time. It's 1/10 of 1%. There is more alcohol in orange juice. Having said that I have to agree. Don't buy it. It tastes like sh*t and your family will be pissed you tried to slip them the fake stuff.

When I am driving I drink Becks or Holsten non-alcoholic beer and if I don't tell anyone they don't know what I am drinking cause it just looks like an import. I actually don't mind it!

Wouldn't it be nice if families could ALL get together without bickering. Unfortunately that's not always the case. Since he's fresh out of rehab, I can understand his concerns. Maybe if he looked at it another way it would be different. He's not depriving himself of something that is good but he's choosen something that will improve his life.

A couple of weeks ago I went completely off sugar. *Mulan that means no alcohol AND no gravy!*

Therefore I'm going to have to be very careful when my family and friends get together. Just because I've choosen to do this for myself, does not mean that I'm going to impose that on others. Heck I want to be invited!

Hope it works out for ya! Keep us posted!

If you are off sugar, why no gravy?

My step father as well as a friend of mine who are both alcoholics drink the NA beer. They haven't had any relapses.. I was also thinking the non alcoholic margaritas, etc and they don't have any alcohol at all.

I'm coming into this line late, so I'll add to that "aunt needs to go to Alanon" thought. She is definately not helping the situation by being codependent. I suspect that the son may be too new into AA to know to stand up for himself yet, so she is doing him no favors.

In my case, my partner is an alcoholic. I am not. She has taught me so much about AA, and I have used a LOT of the precepts in my recovery from the borg. Personally we have no alcohol in the house and it is clear that when the family gatherings are at our house there will be no alcohol served. This year Thanksgiving is at her mom's and she will have alcohol there. I will not drink. It really has no impact on me to drink or not and even though I know a little alcohol on my breath isn't going to be a breaking point for her, I see it as respectful.

Having said that, I live with her and you don't live with your cousin. I think you all need to make up your mind whether its the family thats more enjoyable or the alcohol. They aren't mutually exclusive. Good luck with your decision.

Mulan, I have to watch out for the foods that turn into sugar after they enter your body. I think I'm hypoglycemic *low blood sugar*. I'm getting some blood work done tomorrow. It's amazing how many foods turn into sugar after you eat them! It's the pits!

I'm dying for some chocolate! But if it's gonna make me feel better, I'm gonna stop.

    How's your mama?

I thought that might be it. I do much better if I avoid sugar too. But sugar seems to be the problem, not things that convert to sugar. Also, I can lose weight very easily if I eliminate sugar, but I can still eat bread and gravy, and have a drink if I want it. Sugar is my enemy, and I crave it.

Gretchen, that is very comendable how you have given your spouse the support needed! Personally I really enjoy beer and will have it in my house regardless who is over. I think it should be up to the individual to deal with it and if they need support I would gladly help.

My father inlaw a heavy alcholic who was saposta stop drinking and wont, his liver is fading and has low platelets. For a while he did, then the chandies started. Many times we have tried to tell him he has a problem and would like to get him help but he is to set in his ways. I thing you need hobbies, his only hobby is drinking with his drinking buddies. It is amazing how many dead people we know from the pub!
