In my apartment building, robers stole 2 garbage cans on wheels.

Someone stole my garbage can in Tennessee a few years ago...it was chock full of trash at the time...and they took the trash with them...which was pretty descent of them.

It's never encouraging to hear such experiences, sorry to hear about it. Yes, it's sad when we have to tie or lock things up. Here's an interesting story that appeared in the newspaper some years ago. A man in Brooklyn was sitting at his friends steps all the while watching these movers move furniture from his apartment building not realizing that it was his furniture. Yes, they stole his furniture right in front of him! Imagine his feeling?

Sorry to hear of your experience, Mulan. We haven't been burgled, but a friend who lives nearby had his electronic equipment stolen, tv, video etc. He claimed on insurance, bought new, and then that was stolen too within a few weeks.

I have a really funny story to share. I'm not suggesting anyone try this, but it is hilarious!

One of the girls who works for me in the office got a call last week from her husband saying he had to go down to the police station with his Mom. It seems that Mom had come home from getting her hair done and noticed a bicycle in the back hard of her house. So, she walked around to the back and there were these two teenaged boys (16 & 17) coming out of her back patio door with a couple of sacks full of goodies (real-life grinches!!) One of them was even holding a pistol that "Mom" kept on her bedside table. Since she knew it was unloaded, but figures they didn't, she stopped the boys at the bottom of the deck, startling them, and grabbed the pistol from the one kid's hand. She proceeded to hold them at gunpoint and back them across the yard to her neighbor's house, then yelled for her neighbor to call 9-1-1. The operator for 9-1-1 got a little upset when she overheard "Mom" saying to the boys, "I should put this gun down and whip your little a$$es."

I'll bet it will be awhile before these boys rob anyone else!!

Sorry to hear that Mulan. We too have had our home burglarize. My wife and I are reading your story. It reminded her of the time she came home from shopping with her mom and had the two boys with her at her side.As she entered the house she saw the mess made by the burglars. All our personal records that we kept in a locked metal box were gone among other valuables. She called me at my place of work in tears,I came right home.We made a police report etc. They caught the burglars, but, nothing of ours was recovered.

So sorry to hear about the loss.

Just a thought however ... regarding the insurance company.

I'm not sure of the total value of the items and repairs but you may be better off paying for it yourself instead of using your insurance. Your insurance can increase substantially if they are the ones paying.

Mulan, I'm so sorry this happened to you. When someone is so bold as to steal in broad daylight, then what can you do except learn from this and try to take more precautions.

Several years back, we lived next to a pretty wild and unrully family--husband wife and three boys. HOA could do nothing, and the police were always over there, but we just had to "endure". We bought a brand new garbage container on wheels and put our garbage out. When I got home from work, I noticed that the one at our driveway was "not" our new one. Our substitute was one exactly like ours in color and brand, but filthy dirty and totally beat up. We looked around, but did not see "ours" sitting in the culdesac. A couple days later, I took our garbage out to the curb in that old thing, and watched our "neighbor" bring out a brand new garbage container, and I immediately knew it was ours. So I kindly pointed out to her that I believed the "garbage men must have switched our containers", and that she had our new one and we had theirs. She looked me right in the eye and said "prove it", and walked away.

In hindsight I had wanted to put our name in black magic marker on the top and bottom of the container, but hubby believed it wasn't necessary. Now we tend to mark everything.
