I didn't find out about the UN involvement until after I was already out, but I think that if I had been in, I would not have believed it. The thought is to absurd. It would be like telling me that the Witnesses in Russia join the army. Laughable.

Of course, if someone gave me hard evidence for it, I would be forced to consider it, I suppose. But based on my pattern of action, I think it would probably have been a heavy weight stacking against the organization in my subconscious. On the surface, I literally was strong-strong-strong-strong-strong-OUT.

I think the UN membership is just SO hypocritical that even the average dub can't help but see it.

This is the borg that would disfellowship and dishonor all those who would say the Pledge of Allegiance (in the US) or join the YMCA to use the swimming pool. These are concrete ways, real things that average dubs have sacrificed in order to remain in Jehovah's good graces. And now they see their so-called leaders whoring themselves out. What is the difference between joining the Y to use the pool and joining the UN to use the library? NOTHING!

The changes in doctrine are to be expected among a people that look at "new light" as something to get excited about. They tend to get waved away as not important; after all, I believe that most dubs are sincere in their belief that they are serving God and love him as best they can, so a "new light" isn't going to throw most people who serve on emotion. I know that's how I got over it; I just trusted that Jehovah knew what he was doing with regard to the organization.

But the UN hypocrisy was a betrayal of the highest order - a naked double standard that reveals the unholy arrogance on the part of the perpetrators. In the seventies, Malawi brothers weren't allowed to pay 25 cents for a universal party card and be spared the hideous nature of the persecution that ensued; but the GB is allowed to promise to "support and uphold the ideals of the United Nations" in order to GET SOME BOOKS that they could have borrowed from ANYWHERE in New York? It's a visceral sensation, like in Braveheart when William Wallace pulled off his enemy's helmet and saw it was Robert the Bruce working against him all this time. Of course, good dubs wouldn't have seen that Rated R movie...

Of course, some dubs will be able to rationalize it, even to the bitter end. They are still getting too much from various aspects of the borg - but to those who have nothing, gave up all their hopes in this life to the ramblings of an organization, have been crushed and bruised beyond anything the Pharisees ever did to the poor sods under THEIR feet, I have this to say:

Don't follow these guys; they don't care about you! They will betray you and use you and then sell you out and dump you by the side of the road without an explanation, if they don't beat you senseless first just for kicks.

The policy itself has not changed. JWs do not vote. If they do, it is automatically assumed that they no longer want to be a JW, and are considered DA'd. It is presented this way simply to deflect attention from governments that may not take kindly to anyone trying to interfere with citizen's right to vote.
I had this explained to me by an elder. Although he couched the explanation a little more carefully

this poster has stated it exactly the way it is- there is no other reason- awhile back we discussed on this site how the wt would continue to move DFING OFFENSES OVER TO DA OFFENSE to avoid legal concerns, BUT GET THE SAME TREATMENT FROM LOYAL JW TOWARDS THOSE who get this new classification

i had an elder tell me many years ago that when the WTS say "it a conscience issue" they really mean, "NO SELF RESPECTING LOYAL JW WOULD DO THAT AND IF U DO WE WILL SHUN U" that is it, not any more complicated. Doublespeak.

actually I think those DA'd are shunned with more contempt than those DF'd. It is like if you get DA'd, you have committed the unforgiveable sin... and it scares people, they are afraid if they come near you, they too might get that disease.

I have to admit, I didn't really hear much about the UN situation until after I got out. I actually need to understand it more clearly. To me, the difference between all the reasons people might leave, brought up in the first comment here is that they didn't explain in the local congregations anything about the UN situation. So if you didn't hear it from the outside, it really didn't effect you that much. Where as the child molestation investigations on Date Line, we had a part on the service meeting special to 'comfort us' and 'prepare us' when 'alligations' were attacked upon the WTS. So they set us up to not look at it as clearly, now looking back at it. As far as the generation change, well, we have always heard about how the 'light keeps getting brighter'... so.. some just chocked it up to that.. remember we were brainwashed, so you just flowed with the excuses...

I really think if I had understood more about the UN and their connection to it, I would have begun to doubt more. Just the fact that they refused to address it officially and explain it, tells me something. I wish someone would have told me that the bound volumes I had until I moved did not match the CDs because they changed past information. THAT is big to me, it is like the nations in history that erased the defeats that happened from their books... as if to take it from memory that such words were ever written.

I don't think it has affected the Witnesses at all. Witnesses don't know about it. How the heck would a JW know? And even if they know, no biggy.

I myself, never read one word against the WTS before i stopped attending. I was programed that way. I only started learning about all their lies after i got the internet and had stopped attending anyhow. I left b/c of the lack of love and hatefulness in the WTS. I stopped going in service b/c i refused to destroy another persons life. I was upset by the generation issue, and felt confused and adrift at sea b/c of it.

It seems to me that every time one of there lies came out in the open they covered it with another lie. Those involved in that religion were so brain washed that they could not see these lies and just followed what was being told to them as they seem to do through out the past of the borg. If they can manage to brain wash someone into believing their faith why would they not beable to succeed in successful deception.?

Unfortunately, I have to somewhat agree with Joker10. JWs aren't normally exposed to this information unless they stumble across it on the internet. Even then, they're taught to abhor what they read on the internet. Their "Bible Trained conscience" will send that feeling of guilt through their body.

However, I left before the internet started to really catch on. I don't know how many JWs own computers connected to the internet. What I do know is, if there's something on the news about the JWs, the ones watching (or reading) will focus in to see if they are being persecuted (a sign of the last days). This is one of the WTS biggest glitches for keeping their members away from the media. JWs want to know exactly how they're being persecuted so they'll be prepared for it.
