"the U.N." - it's effects on the witnesses

Dateline was a wake up call for me. I was severely shaken and wrote to headquarters to voice my outrage. But it was the exposure to XJW's who told me about the UN that sealed the coffin. I stopped going to meetings out of disgust over the child abuse issue. I could have recovered from the shock. It was like biting into an apple and finding a bruise. Cutting off the bruised spot leaves the rest of the apple edible. But the UN expose was a clear indication that the rot was at the very top and had spread throughout the whole apple. The whole apple was chucked in the trash.

I think that is true of others who have left as a result of the UN thing. It is just too big to be ignored.

On the other hand - my so-called friend reasoned it all away and ran from my house in horror. She then warned others about my apostate leanings.

I have to say, and i bet i am right, most JWS leave without the help of apostates. The WTS sinks it own ship;it harldy needs anyones help. I left b/c I SAW THE LIES. I saw the LACK OF LOVE. Later , the apostate sites became very useful. JWS drove me away, not the apostates. They are their own worst enemy.

I agree wholeheartedly, Wednesday, the WTS is its own worst enemy. Hang them by their own words. Blondie

I was "in" when the information came out in the WT about it having NGO status in the UN. Their explanation suited me fine, I just figured it was like registering for a library card, I think they also mentioned that it was the only way to get across the battle lines in order to help the brothers in war torn areas (they'd have UN protection when delivering food and clothing in those Baltic regions. What I never thought of was that I could not join the YMCA to use their stuff or shop at the Salvation Army and buy used clothing from them. I also never knew that having NGO status meant they had to give the UN certain information in exchange for that "library" usage.

Wednesday and any lurkers: Your statement fits me exactly. I never read any apostate literature - not on a single occasion - until after I had determined that the organization was bunk. The "apostate literature," or more accurately, the true accounting of facts, that I read afterward helped clarify things in my own mind and exposed me to much information that I did not have.

It was kind of like me pulling up the curtain a little bit and seeing enough to know I needed to make a change, and then someone just dropping the curtain altogether to show me the true extent of the problems.

    That is so true.

Although probably because they put the fear of damnation in you if you listen to apostates. You are afraid if you listen or read apostate literature you will somehow be struck with lightening or something.

If I had known what I know now from apostates, I would have left a long time ago.... but I didn't listen until I had already made the choice to no longer be a JW.

The Mediator - that's the thing that should cause any dub to question.

How many dubs realise that they are supposed to believe that "the organisation" is their mediator, and not Christ?

They have even been baptised not into Christ but into the organisation, but when they answer that second baptism question they probably didn't notice.

Cheers Gumby, have a happy Xmas!

Got out a little before the UN scandal.

I already had spent 5 years "coasting". I would not try to get converts when what I saw did not agree with my perceived idea of Christianity: lack of love, hypocrisy, and phariseeism. I was raised a Catholic, and made me sick when JWs would not give to charity unless they saw a prospective convert.

An elder in Guadalajara, very loving one, got demoted because he beat the cr*p out of someone who tried to rape his daughter. Heck, I'd probably have killed him.

On the other hand, my ex-wife and her brother-in-law, Cesar, told me that it was Ok to bribe the driver's licence examiners "because there was no way you could get one without bribing them". I later found out that wasn't true, and many people told me they received it without a bribe.

My ex would justify going to a party without me because an elder had invited her. The problem is that I caught her before her telling me about it. If they weren't hiding anything, why not tell me? Yeah, right. Her elder sibling commited adultery with a High Schooler. He had a son almost her age. Her other brother, also a JW, but publisher only, committed adultery too. My cousin was found naked in a motel with two other men. She had already been DFd twice before for the same thing: adultery. Another JW living a block from us was on his fourth wife. The previous three had been adulterous. Lucky for him he had detective tools.

She would claim that it was not individuals, but the whole organization what is judged. Not from what I saw around me.

JWs aren't normally exposed to this information unless they stumble across it on the internet.

Nos, thats true. That is also true with the pedophile issue to some degree. Unless somebody watched dateline, or heard about it from another, then they would not learn about it at the hall. There has been much more media exposer to the molestation issues than the UN issue.

I guess my point should have been that I am surprised there were as many as there was in which this UN issue clenched any doubts ones had. When that event happened, many who read about it here and similar sites.....also told believing JW relatives and friends about it that produced some results as far as some leaving the cult.

All in all, from the answers here, .....everyone has had a different reason for leaving. For some it was hypocracy withing the borg, lack of love in the borg, the Pedophile issue, aid from another whom already exited, etc.

One thing for sure.....many have left as a result of us proud damn apostates, who help others out who come here for answers concerning the JW's
