I think most people expect way too much of Presidents. Many believe that they are some 18th-century King or Czar.
Sadly I believe that increasingly, the real power is in big businesses (S&P 500) and the lobbyists they use to influence and bribe government bureaucrats, the press, and congressmen around the WORLD.
Think about it, with a US population of 333 MILLION, just the top 2% of IQs and education would leave you with 6 million+ possible candidates..certainly not what we usually see running for the job.
US President gets paid 400k per year, not bad, but the AVERAGE S&P 500 CEO gets paid 16 MILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR. "According to a June 2024 Associated Press study, the median total compensation for S&P 500 CEOs in 2023 was $16.3 million, which is a 12.6% increase from the previous year. This is a significant increase that outpaced the 4.1% increase in wages and benefits for private-sector workers in 2023. In fact, at half of the companies surveyed, it would take a middle-level worker almost 200 years to earn what their CEO does."
