Here's one the Dubs twist around big time: Judges 11:29-40. Witnesses explain that Jepthah's daughter wasn't actually made a burnt offering for the Lord, just that she became celibate the rest of her life. But that flatly contradicts verse 39 which states, "at the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to the vow he had made."

Just what was this vow? Verse 31:

"Whoever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me when I retrun victorious from the Ammonites, shall be the Lord's, to be a offerred up by me as a burnt offering."

It's a clear cut case of human sacrifice that the Dubs and fundy's distort unashamedly.

Not so much to the point but interesting nonetheless is the following:

2 Kings 3:26f: "When the king of Moab saw that the battle was going against him, he took with him seven hundred swordsmen to break through, opposite the king of Edom; but they could not. Then he took his firstborn son who was to succeed him, and offered him as a burnt offering on the wall. And great wrath came upon Israel, so they withdrew from him and returned to their own land."

In the original polytheistic context, it means the king of Moab has to resort to the ultimate emergency weapon: sacrificing his own son to the gods. This stops the victory of Israel over Moab, i.e. Yhwh over Kamosh.

Now just think it over in a monotheistic context (if Yhwh is God).

    Bradley,

You're maybe right, that verse is more crude really.

I was trying not to choose one of the many verses that describe ethnic cleansing such as Deutoronomy 2:34.

God kills 42,000 because someone mispronounces a word.

    Judges 12:6:
Then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to pronounce it right. Then they took him, and slew him at the passages of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites forty and two thousand.

Judges has to be one of the worst books!

    Judges 19:22-29

[Now] as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, [and] beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.

And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, [nay], I pray you, do not [so] wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.

Behold, [here is] my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.

But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.

Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord [was], till it was light. And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down [at] the door of the house, and her hands [were] upon the threshold.

And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her [up] upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.

And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, [together] with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.

    Judges 19:22-30

After taking in a traveling Levite, the host offers his virgin daughter and his guest's concubine to a mob of perverts (who want to have sex with his guest). The mob refuses the daughter, but accepts the concubine and they "abuse her all night." The next morning she crawls back to the doorstep and dies. The Levite puts her dead body on an ass and takes her home. Then he chops her body up into twelve pieces and sends them to each of the twelve tribes of Israel.

The obvious point that a Bible apologist would make with regard Judges 19 is that nowhere does it state that Yahweh condoned that behavior -- it's just a description of what happened. That being said, there are so many other verses which show Yahweh or his chosen deliberately acting in a very distasteful way that we can rightfully call the Old Testament a book of genocidal fanaticism.

I say we kick Yahweh out of office and replace him with Aphrodite. A femenine touch would be nice for the office of deity.

You'll have to find him first... I can't say I've seen him around in the last few thousand years. (Although there were a few claimed sightings in Palestine a couple of thousand years ago, I guess.)
