Well, first off, I wouldn't refer to their faith as "The Truth". Whenever one does that, it makes them think that you might still believe it is the absolute only way.

This has not happened to me in a very long time with someone that I actually knew from the borg.As I recall, the last time it did, I was quite nervous inside and I had many mixed emotions. I think I just told them that I appreciated their concern, but I was just fine.

Now days, I believe things would be entirely different in such a conversation. There is no lingering doubt, guilt or low self respect. I think I would handle it just as I did to the last witness that came to my door. I would tell them that I appreciated the efforts of taking their personal time to call on me at my home. Then I would tell them that at one time I was deep into that particular belief system, but had long ago decided that it was not for me. I smile and I am most friendly, but I do not invite them in and I do not take any literature. When they leave, they realize that they have conversed with an x-jw who was once even a full time Pioneer; one who now has got her wits about her, is at peace and quite happy. I believe that alone would make them think a bit.

Yeah, not bad, but wouldn't that answer put them on the defensive? It is a retort after all, a good one yes, but still a retort that will cause the old shut down in seconds.

it's not what you say, it's how you say it, i wouldn't say it in a retortfull tone, i would say it in my gentle injured tone which begs them to be concerned and ask 'why'. hehe

    Dhamah:

'did you ever stop to think that i left for scriptural reasons'

You've gone up in my estimation - that's an excellent one-liner

    Sirona:
I like it. It cuts deeply to the point.

How about a sorrowful look first?

Then a quiet: "Unfortunately I came across a sticking point that I just haven't been able to resolve. It's my problem, no-one has been able to come up with a solution to it".

Remember that this is a big fish that we're trying to land and the line is only 3 pounds breaking strain!

I am not out yet, but making a fade, I believe I would say that I could not in all conscience, continue to be a Christian the way the Bible lays out, and still be one of JWs.

    Great thread Eman,

I was able to do this a month ago with a "sister" who was forced to do business with me in her retail business. After a long silence she finally asked why I left, especially in such a public fashion as we did. I told her:

For twenty five years my conscience has been screeming and I finally listened to it.

After another pause she responded, "well I guess if your going to leave, that would be a good reason".

Eman, I prefer 25lb line with a steel tracer, but I can understand you're wanting to make it sporting

I've been in that position more than once, and what works for me is to ask them to think about what Cervantes is purported to have said once: ``I'd much rather go through life with questions I can't answer than questions I can't ask." I think it gets across to the listener the nature of my objections to the ham-handed authoritarianism of the WTBTS without putting the listener on the defensive or turning him/her off.

    Steve,

Good one mate, that you had a conscience about being a JW would certainly throw them out of kilter.

    Li'l Toe,

I'm fishin' for ex's, not bloody conger eels!
