I remember going to hospitals and depositing old mags in the waiting rooms. If someone was in there though, I would skip it. Too damned ashamed to do it while people were watching. Here's the really bad part; we usually did this when visiting "friends" in the hospital so we could count our time while there. Is that not just the lowest? I am thoroughly ashamed of myself right now.
Makes me wonder about the old lady that accosted you. Was she more concerned about her husbands health or counting magazines? Old bitch.
actually amac, many hospitals use hospital labels that they place over old addresses on donated materials. That helps them "defend" against patients who are upset when they happen upon controversial materials that were not provided by the hospital. Or, they will occasionally cut out the old label. Not long ago I found a tract in a hospital bathroom. Now, I could have assumed the hospital wanted me to leave it there... hmmm... what to do... I threw it out, of course.
I'm glad you asked the volunteer office/public relations office at your local hospital (and not Fred the orderly or Wilma the secretary who doesn't give a damn about hospital policy either way) That's good of you.
That said, I still feel quite comfortable in throwing out those magazines.
I hope the laundromat doesn't take offense if i toss it's watchtowers!

Since Shoshana was addressing the issue of freedom of speech, which I raised in my comments, I presume that I am the individual whose post you so kindly referred to as "the uninformed speculation of an amateur."
I nowhere stated that I was referring to legal freedom of speech, as in First Amendment rights. I stated: "we complain about the fact that JWs say that 'apostate' literature should be thrown in the trash." Is it a violation of the First Amendment for JWs to teach this? Of course not. It's a violation of the broad ethical principle of freedom of speech.
If I were to post a leaflet advertising a support group of ex-JWs, or a SilentLambs brochure, I would be angry and disgusted if a Witness were to take it down or throw it away; not because it would be illegal, but because it would be unethical. I don't see how I can feel that way, and yet advocate the throwing away of Watchtower literature, without being a hypocrite.
I know of at least one person out in California who, whenever they find a stray magazine in a waiting room or laundromat, does not dispose of it, but simply staples a brochure neatly to the inside front cover of the magazine that gives a summation of erroneous JW doctrine, and a phone number and website to contact for further information.
Anybody have a tract that covers a few good topics and points to a few good websites?

Heaven knows that I'm neither a copy-writer nor a graphic-designer, but I worked up a crude handbill. If anyone can work it into something presentable and wants to use it, be my guest.
