LIES I tell you.. all LIES!!!!

Oh, wait a minute... they really did join up with the UN.

Don't worry... they had a good reason to be involved with the scarlet colored beast... they needed a library card!

Thanks for posting that, somebodylovesme! Isee the same ol' reasonings are going on.

Whatever the case is I don't need to see it. Unless a copy has been distributed by the normal means (Kingdom Hall and Publications) by the Society themselves.

I know Jzero personally. It's sad to see him being so closed-minded.

I would bet anything that brucejw isn't a real Witness, however. The whole "someone showed this to me out in service" ploy has always been a classic one that infiltrators on Witness websites have used..

    Yep! I agree.

    Euphemism -

I never even THOUGHT of that. Duhhh I'm dumb. Silly me, I thought I was the only one allowed to sneak onto their board. :) Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. I should have thought of doing that. ;)

The closed-mindedness is overwhelming. Sigh. I read WW only for things like this -- sometimes I try to stir things up subtly, but I haven't had the guts to start a post this controversial.

    Back to lurking now... bwahahahahahahaaaa...

Here are more responses from Witness World. I don't believe endvr is a real Witness either.

PLEASE READ. I hope this doesn't get lost in the replies, because it is very important.

I was presented this information awhile back and did what was suggested in this post - wrote to the Society. I received a very courteous and enlightening response.

The WTS did register as an NGO (non-governmental organization) to receive access to the UN library to do research they otherwise would not have been able to. They apparently did not fully understand the obligations of an NGO, and when concerns were raised, they withdrew their membership.

I can provide a copy of my letter from the Society if anyone would like to see it.

I think this could be used by apostates to disuade faithful ones, but the information in itself is correct -- but it does not mean the WTS is currently "involved" in the UN. They were just using the library. If anyone would like to discuss this further, I can share with you any of the other information I was thoughtfully given by the Society.

    Endvr and others,
A few years ago this came up in a discussion on one of the boards and linked to the UN site where it was. And it was exactly that, a NGO member. (non government organization). I spoke to someone I knew at Bethel at the time and was told the same as you about joining to get info from the UN library or something to that effect. Then after reading further into what belonging to it involved, they unjoined. They are no longer part of that. But apparently it did make news somehow and became an object of discussion for a few months if I remember correctly.

Thanks Kaloho... I'm glad I'm not the only one backing this up! It certainly was topic of discussion for awhile. I remember I had some conflicting feelings at the time because I was also given the documents showing that in order to become an NGO, a group has to show that they support the goals of the UN, which is not following with the Scriptures. They also submitted some magazines to the UN as per the NGO requirements.

However, after many talks with an elder and a lot of thought and prayer, I have reconciled this. It is not information that should be a "weapon" - rather it is something that happened that is minute, and while it may cause some conflicting feelings, one must take care not to read too much into it.

Youre welcome Endver. Yeah, it was quite a discussion at the time. But sometimes wrong decisions are made and when facts are presented, things get corrected. Jehovah always takes care of things.

I'm very confused over this. Is this letter true then or is it apostate? Some here are saying it's a fraud and others are saying the Society was an NGO member of the UN. Endvr where did you find this information from? Was it from a legitimate source or from an apostate?

I remember reading a Watchtower article about false religions being NGO members but nothing about the Society being a member. I can't remember which Watchtower it was. I'll have to look it up.

It's a good thing we have a variety of people on this board! That letter certainly did seem to me to be something an apostate would dream up. It seems as though, instead it's something that an apostate twisted around. At least now Bruce you can tell the person it was just a temporary mistake and that it has been rectified.

I can understand how something like that could happen - look at all the government institutions we use without having to 1st pledge our support. Too bad some keen eyes had to notice it before it could be remedied!

Interesting...I am not sure what to think. The letter looked very legit but I had a hard time accepting that the society would sign up as an NGO when they had to say they support the UN's charter.

I have since searched Google (very carefully!!) and found that this was first reported in October 2001 by the UK Guardian. It is not a lie... the society did register with the UN.

I'm going to try and confirm that registering was necessary to gain access to their library.

Thanks again for everyone's feedback. smile.gif

It IS true. The Society has said so. I don't have a scanner to show you my letter, but I can type it in (in part):

    ----
"In 1991 one of our legal corporations registered with the United Nations as a NGO (non-governmental organization) for the sole purpose of getting access to the extensive library of the United Nations. This enabled a writer who received an identification card, to enter their library for research purposes and to obtain information that has been used in writing articles in our journals about the United Nations. There was nothing secret about it."
    ----

I feel comfortable sharing this because as they wrote, there is nothing to hide. They were seeking access to information.

I would like to interject my personal opinion, but I ask of you all not to judge me for. As I said in an earlier reply, I did have conflicting feelings about this when I first learned of it, and while I have reconciled that, I still believe that becoming an NGO was an error on the Society's part. I don't know who all was involved in the decision and I do not mean to needlessly criticize any brother.

My concern lies in the fact that one does not have to become an NGO to have access to the library. There is a separate process to get the same access. Perhaps the Society was not aware of this - or for all I know, there was some other obstacle or difficulty. I was not there, I do not know. But I do know that when they became an NGO in 91, the requirement was that all NGOs support the goals and visions of the UN.

Obviously the Society saw the error and recinded their membership in (I think) 2001 or 2002. Now, I want to say again that I am not trying to attack or speak poorly of the Society. Not at all! Rather, I just want to share my knowledge because of the confusion expressed by others on this board. I ask you not to judge me for my honesty. I hope it is not inappropriate.

I would suggest that if any among you have concerns, that you talk to your elders. That is what helped me. You may also write to the Society. It can take awhile for a response but is well worth the peace of mind if you are unconvinced; they also clearly express their original intentions and affirm their beliefs.

I hope this came out right... it is a sticky topic because there IS misinformation out there (like Coca Cola, apparently!) and some are uncomfortable not knowing for certain the facts. But these are the facts as I know from correspondance from the Society - and that is information that is clearly valid.

Thank you endver for your balanced viewpoint. You confirmed what I have since found... the Society did not need to sign up as an NGO to gain access to the library.

They made a mistake and fixed it once it was discovered. Bad judgement call on the part of someone at the Society... hey, it happens.

Ultimately I don't know how to handle this. Maybe I shouldn't even go back to the guy that brought this to my attention. I don't want to give him the society's response because it is not 100% correct. I guess I could say the Society thought they had to register as an NGO to gain access to the library but they were mistaken.

Anyway.... I'll mull it over a bit. tongue.gif

Indeed!! It's the only legitimate way to ask certain questions.

To funny, and sad all at once.

Funny because endvr & bruce are unquestionably trying to sneak this in with the impression that they are active, concerned JW's.

I doubt they have been active long at the board since their post count is so low.

They probably posted a few harmless topics to substantiate their credibility, and now they are letting in with the dirt.

A little too quick on the trigger i'd say.

Sad though because the hard-core JW's at the board don't appear to be bothered by the info as they rationalize anything that is brought up RE: the WTS

Maybe a seed will be planted? *shrug*
