The 40,000 df is world-wide. (W 4/1/94) which, at that time, was about 1% of active JWs. That would mean 60,000 at this time, assuming the percentage remains the same - which is debatable.
I stand corrected. My memory on the matter is obviously off.

when I look back at the people who were in my first cong 20 years ago i would say 1/2--2/3 of them are out now. even our congregation overseer was Dfd years ago. I think more would leave if they had a chance, but are to afraid for one reason or another. Many of the young people are leaving--i remember an overseer say 75% about 5 years ago--i think it may be higher than that. those statistic vary depending on where you live I'm sure. the people left behind are either going crazy or getting more radical--many of them scare me now...
I don't think you will ever get stats again from the Watchtower on disfellowshipping, I thought it was an unusual move to publish it in the Watchtower, and it is all we have to go on. I guess that the figure can only rise, judging by our own experience, and the internet.
