So going to a service would resemble not much more than a 'do as i say or else meeting'?

Not all the time. They might tone things down for their Sunday 'public talks'.

It's a "carrot and stick" approach. They have to use both to be effective.

The carrot = endless promises of Armageddon (this world's end) to be followed by a wonderful paradise earth inhabited only by Jehovah's Witnesses.

The stick = demands to comply or do more, otherwise you might not be saved.

What peaked my interest was that I was considering going to a service just to observe - but I wanted to understand a bit more first.

What does confuse me I think is - if they are trying to rule you and get their interpretation of the bible into you - what IS their interpretation? What about me (a young adult - caucassion - engaged - woman) would they try to change or get me to believe?

No offense intended but................Have you read anything on this board? Have you not read the horror stories that people bravely share here? The "organization" you wish to "observe" is a cult. Stay far, far away. Keep your family far, far away. Trust us; we know of that which we speak.

    Sincerely,

    Maya

So you sorta answered my question abou tthe interpretation already.

When they come to my door - is it for my benefit or their own. There has to benefits to following the rules even if it is simply promises of somehting better

I have read the whole board and I was asking these questions maya to see about observing - not saying i was - I wanted to understand BEFORE I went - which is why I came here.

Once we had a travelling overseer (they come twice a year to each congregation) say that the first reason he goes out in the ministry is to save himself. Then it is to give opportunity to others to hear the "good news". (This is based on the scripture where bible-writer Paul said "woe is me if I did not declare the good news". Of course Paul was talking about HIS ministry and not about all other Christians, but anyhoo...)

They have to have a regular share in the ministry because they record the number of hours spent, magazines and books placed, etc,. on this little monthly timeslip that they turn in to their elders. So the better the numbers, the more "active" you look when it comes to their form of Christianity.

Door-to-door service accomplishes the WTS' objective of literature distribution leading to further income possibilities for the corporation, while for the individual publishers it is either a social outing interrupted by a few unpleasant encounters with actual householders, or for others it is a platform to use to show what great "Witnesses" they are.

The answer would fill a book. Ok, a couple of basics.

The watchtower bible and tract society of new york (the jws, basically) is god's one and only chosen org on the earth at this time. They speak for god, have the only truth about him, are the only channel for salvation.

Jehovah will soon kill all nonjws in armageddon.

After that the earth will become a literal paradise, dead people resurrected, peoples life spans will be infinite, no one gets old, animals stop eating each other, crime stops, everyone smiles all the time, etc.

I once heard that they divide people into two groups wolves and lambs - is that right?

A few of their rules (think taliban):

    No sex out of wedlock

    No smoking or drugs

    No going to other churches

No doubting of anything the wt says

Put wt and it's intersts first over anything in your life, including family, health, etc
