If this doesn't stop with the principal. Then go up the ladder to the board or super's and make it an issue. Where is the teacher in all of this ? She has some form of responsiblity for your child's safety and well being while she is under his or her care.
X.
The problem with those advocating martial arts classes is this: It takes a looooong time to become proficient enough at any martial art. A kid who takes a class for a few weeks and then stands there like the karate kid when he gets picked on is gonna get laughed at or beaten up.
Bullying by another kid or kids in school can make life at school miserable, unhappy and an unsafe place to be. School is supposed to be safe. From the time our children get on the bus until the time they get off the bus it is the responsiblity of your school and school board to keep them safe.
Go directly to the principle as scully suggested. Plant yourself by his door and don't leave until you know that this is going to be handled.
In Canada, a child of 12 years old can be charged under the Young Offenders Act.

P. S. The principle also told you that whenever a kid is bullied or picked on in school for us to come in and see him so he could keep a written documentation of events as they happen. Then if it really gets out of hand or you wish to take further action, it won't seem like this is the first time anyone has ever heard about it.
Threaten to go to Bill O'Reilly if they don't fix the situation...he loves stories about schools not doing their job.
Seriously though...on a personal level the best way to handle a bully is confrontation...which generally leads to suspension....but is effective...worked for me a LOT.
Have a lawyer call the principle and threaten legal action...and a personal suit against the prinicple for child endangerment.
Start bullying the principle after school everyday till he/she gets the point.

Iron,
There's a difference between self defense classes and martial arts...I agree, it takes years of training in the martial arts to become good...however, a good self defense class can give a person tools within a month.
You could always get your kid a can of mace or pepper spray and the next time spray in face then beat the holy hell out of the little brat .
I also suggest you get involved with the parent teacher organization and bring your problem to the attention of the school board . Confronting the parents of the other child might help and if they don't listen take your can of mace or pepper spray out and beat the holy hell out of them .
When my son first started middle school he was bothered by a couple of jealous little bullies. They were making his life miserable everyday before and after school and between classes. The school would do nothing about it. I was blowing things out of proportion according to some school staff. Of course the bullies were from wealthy families. ho hum.
One day I was watching the bus stop waiting for the little bastards and sure enough they started in on him calling him names and trying to provoke a fight before the bus arrived.
I walked over to the bus stop and put on my meanest face, told those kids if they didn't stop bothering __________ I knew where they lived and I was coming over to their houses and kick their mothers ass's!
I unfortunately embarrassed my son a little but he quickly got over it and as a result he made more friends due to other kids at school who heard about it and thought it was pretty funny.
Stefanie, I was thinking, where is Scully, and there she was.
Hope things go well, I know what it is like to be bullied. I had the crap beat out of me once at the age of 7.
