Hi Little Witch,
Thanks for your reasonableness. It's refreshing.
But to get on my soapbox: I haven't been posting to this thread or others because of the angry replies from some quarters that political discussion and ideas seem to generate.

Hi Yeru,
Thanks for your "reasonable" and unbiased post. it was SO enlightening. I'm sure that anyone who disagrees with your ideas is just a dumbass. I was waiting with bated breath for your leadership on this issue. Of course, I know there's no other views but yours.
Pat
P.S. You said:
contention that disunity should be the democratic slogan? As if those were the only two options? Is it your contention that no matter what a president decides should be followed blindly without question? That people are to shut up and have no right of disagreement? That, sir, would hardly be a democracy.
Patio,
You're the bastion of enlightened and unbiased opinions...lecture me on that when you give up your Liberals United decoder ring.
You asked if the message of United We Stand was that dissent is wrong...the answer is no, that's never been the message...as much as you want to demonize the right, that is neither a conservative or liberal slogan, it's one proclaiming that unity of effort equals strength.
I know that doesn't fit your world view that says the US, and all governments, must bow to the UN as the superior authority...but it's your liberalism that is a greater threat to freedom than slogan's like "United We Stand." Or do you disavow the liberalism that would criminalize politically incorrect speech?
I fly the flag at my site as an act of defiance against my Jehovah's Witness Upbringing.
I suffered wicked persecution in school for taking my forced JW stand not saluting the Flag.

Get it right patio, there's no other CORRECT view but mine.
Blacksheep, Yeru, etc.,
So, does the term "United We Stand" mean that I should not oppose the war in Iraq or, say, the US "Patriot" act?
I'd like to know your opinion.
Bradley
An answer from etc...lol
No it does not mean that Logan! Not in my opinion! Dissent and vocalizing your views helps to maintain our system of checks and balances.
To illustrate my point, consider the slave issue in our countries history. The country was THANKFULLY divided. Civil war raged over the issue. Passions ran deep. What would have happened if those in disagreement remained quiet and didnt fight for what they believed in?
Our concern for this country, indeed for the world, must be hashed out. It must be discussed and gone over. And every persons veiws must be respected and given consideration. That is the beauty of democracy and how history is shaped.

Don't be intimidated by loudmouths. Politics are IMPORTANT especially to ex jw's who have been denied the right to voice their opinions!
I am glad you are on these topics. I am very open to discuss politics. Your voice matters! Ultimatly we should all discuss these things, and talk about where our country is going. I can't think of anything more important! Never let anybody intimidate you into silence again dear. In the end, we as citizens get a vote, and the votes tally and move society forward. History shows that.
Remember that this is all just talk. It gets emotional, and strong. You can handle it. Some people may want you to shut up, cause they don't agree with you or what not. But do not give in to such control. Your points and voice will come out and be acknowledged, if not by all, then by most. We are not all judgemental and caught up in our own desires.
So, does the term "United We Stand" mean that I should not oppose the war in Iraq or, say, the US "Patriot" act?
People are free to do whatever they want. However, I find it of great interest that the szchizoid left who is so opposed to the Patriot Act are the same people trying to accuse Bush of not doing enough to prevent 9/11. Because of the Patriot Act, which would never be accepted by the center left pre 911,we've been much better able to PREVENT the 9/11s/terrorism on domestic soil. Whatever. Just don't talk out two sides of your mouth.
With regard to opposing the war, again, this is the US, you can do whatever you want. However, I think it is extremely demoralizing the troups; and particularly when Americans seem to actually SIDE with the terrorists, it definately works against the interests of the US; the terrorists are exploiting it. Basic fact of life.
But whatever, remember that whatever your position, I am free to disagree with it. Just like you are free to express it.
Patio,
After thinking about this for awhile I'm starting to believe your JW past has tainted your opinion on this issue....follow me now...as a Dub you were told to be a United Congregation, meant no dissent...United We Stand allows for loyal dissent...it doesn't allow undermining US policy and soldiers.
Brad,
Yes, under UWS you could oppose the war in Iraq, but aiding the Iraqis would be wrong...
You can indeed oppose the Patriot Act (though why you'd want to is beyond me)...but to disobey the law if you were in the position to do so would be disloyal.
