First off let me thanks for your contributions in advance.

I read this term in post that gave it a negative slant.

Masterbaition is good and whole some,,why would some one use it as negative,,unless they veiwed it a negative???

Is this a Young People Ask article? :-p

I think mental masterbation is fun for the masterdebater, but is no fun for any observers.

The same issue is being discussed in the "That's so gay" thread. It seems that the easiest way to derogate an activity you don't like is to sexualize it in some negative way. Masturbation and homosexuality, even if some of us feel are not negative in any way, are still stigmatized in many sections of society and are thus semiotically legible as indexers of negative attitudes towards the activities described in such a manner. Even if we think that masturbation is perfectly fine and healthy, it is still used in movies like "American Pie" to significantly up the raciness factor. It's like what I was telling you the other day about stereotypes and how they are closed triangles of semiotic relations between an activity, a linguistic symbol, and an attitude towards the activity. Thus, the word "masturbation" refers to a particular sexual activity but there is an indirect meaning of "excess" which is really the social attitude towards masturbation, that it is excessive. Then you can replace the activity with something non-sexual (e.g. like intellectually explaining a phenomenon in a thorough manner) that the word "masturbation" is used to express (as in "mental masturbation), and the understood attitude is that this activity is "excessive". It is symbolically legible.

Mental masturbation is making the mind feel good, while not going anywhere. I would say that it isn't necesarily bad. What could be included in this classification? How about this list?:

    listening to music,

watching most tv programs (except serious stuff, like news, which is largely slanted or propagandistic, and so, it is somebody else hand jobbing you),

    daydreaming,

    having a nonmoney making hobby,

playing a meaningless game like cards,

    watching a sunset,

    telling/listening to jokes,

exploring theories (scientific, spiritual, conspiracy, etc)

    reading fiction

    looking at art

    getting drunk/stoned

I try not to mentally masturbate too often. I don't want to be mentally exhausted when my girlfriend wants to think with me. Sometimes its useful to mentally masturbate a couple hours before we see each other so my mind doesn't wander all over the place. I can sit and relax with her. Its all about balance.
