The elder was just winging it. He obviously heard about it, did some research, and then came up with some "spin" on it that he could live with. He was trying it out on you. It really reveals their pompous nature, doesn't it? 'It bothers me not at all, the Society must have had a good reason." Such a good soldier, following orders, obeying the chain of command. I think that is what bothers me the most is that I was spewing the same type of garbage to somebody else when I was an MS. Shepherding calls were the best forum for offering such "encouragement." It makes me cringe to think about it.

The elder really didn't express his true belief. He made use of the art of "theocratic warfare". You pressed him for an answer. Under pressure he gave you an answer ... in order to confuse you. Actually, he may or may not know the main reason for which the WTS became an NGO ... and I'm not so sure that people who post here really understand the reason for it either. If you think that you do, then I'd like to hear from you here in this thread.

This is a new twist. Do you think this was the relaying of the official stance coming from the WtBTS, or was this explanation this elder's own private idea from rationalizing things to himself? Or was this one of those "unofficial" official explanations, such as when elders are told things by the CO and DO, but aren't given anything in writing?
What do you think, or feel, was going on here? Did you pick up on anything else?

I believe that the elder gave an answer, not to confuse me (he's not that bright), but rather because I did catch him off guard. I don't think that there is any question about that. Whether that is his true belief or not is immaterial and I am not here, nor do I care, to guess whether or not he does believe it. The fact that he said it speaks for itself and the intelligent people on this board can determine for themeselves if that was a satisfactory answer or not. My guess is not.
To answer your question as to why the WTBS was an NGO, I don't think anyone truly knows why and I am not sure that it is important. Of course, if they were being truthful it was for a library card, although I doubt that very seriously (read the definition of lie/lying in the Insight book...*clue*: It's OK for the WTBS because nobody deserves the truth according to their thinking.) My guess is that it was to protect their worldwide holdings and to conform so that the UN and the nations of the world don't disband the WTBS. Like all organized religion they want to retain their money and their power. Nothing more, nothing less.
I think the important thing is that the incredibly hypocritical position by the Org makes them accountable, not only to Jehovah, but also to the millions of people that have sacraficed a normal life for an organization that has been a harlot like the rest of them. If they still want to maintain that it was simply for a library card, and nothing else, then at the very least they have been lukewarm and Jehovah will vomit them out of his mouth. If it is indeed harlotry, which I believe, then they will receive what the rest of "Christendom" receives. Disclaimer: I realize as I am writing this that the old dubbie doctrine is seeping in. I guess I don't even believe that shite anymore, but for the sake of using their own doctrine to judge them guilty, I plead guilty. They have judged others for years using their twisted logic, why not hold them accountable by their own words?

I believe he was probably speaking hypothetically and "shooting from the hip" because he was caught off guard. I would love it if it was the stance of the WTBS, whether official or unofficial, because I think that it would expose them even more. Like I mentioned, I have been a restoration project although I did not want to be, so I am sure he was searching for something that would make me feel better. I was careful to express dismay, as opposed to anger, so that I would not raise the apostate alarm for reasons that I won't go into here.

Over the years I have noticed that somehow JW's have cultivated a certain "initial charm"; it is initial because they only get to use it a few times in the beginning. After that the meanness will set in; but there may be a great, long period of numbness in the interim. Of course, when you are first showing up at the KH, EVERYBODY gets into the act and the classic "love bombing" sets in.
Somehow, though, they get a very DISARMING CHARM into the act. My Dad was the biggest bully I ever knew of, yet he could pull off the charm act extremely well on first approach.

I once caught myself at the door (out in FS) being very SYRUPY & CHARMING; I had pulled off quite a good "con". I get the impression of some spider or scorpion type creature with a large fang that injects a very sophisticated neuro-toxin that first hypnotizes and then paralyzes you for a very long period. You are very easily influenced by suggestion, at first; but when it wears off, you are LOCKED IN to the zombi-fied Borg!!!!

An elder once told me that a possible reason for them signing on as an NGO was to gain access to newly opened countries after the Iron Curtain fell. At the time I was dumbfounded that he admitted as much. I do not think that he realized what he said and the implication of it. Afterall, he did not deny the affiliation, he was just theorizing the possible reason as to why.
To this day, that is the most simplistic and logical reason I have ever heard.
