Is anyone familiar with both of these? Is there much difference between the French spoken in France and that in Canada?
I'm currently learning French off a CD on my way to and from work (actually, a lot is coming back from where I did it at school) but I wondered how similar or different they are? Is Canadian French just French with a North American accent?

The Canuck French, is similar, but NOT the same.
Quebecois francais has its own words/expressions, differing from France francais.
If I hear two French speakers speaking: one from Canada (Quebec for example), and one from France, you can tell. Oh yeah! Big time!
To me ... canadian French language have evoluate from the stage they were separate from France. just like differences in between British's English / American's English / Aussie's Engligh ...
I found myself that the canadadian language is more funny because they use very old words that we do not use here anymore ... It mades the all difference and make them appear more friendly and fun to talk and be with.

Usually French speakers from France and Quebec have no problem understanding each other, especially if they have some knowledge of English.
Seems that France has been somewhat more tolerant of anglicisms at the lexical level (English words) and Quebec at the structural level (English-built expressions with strictly French words).
If you feel perfectly comfortable in Paris, you'll be all right in Montreal I guess...
Aparently when written, apart from a few words that are old fashioned now in France, it's identical. It's chiefly in the way it's spoken that difference lie, and as FBF says, it's analogous to the difference between British English and American English when spoken.
The Canadian French use a lot of the native Indian terms and it tends to be harsh when compared to Parisan French. I grew up with the Canadian French and like Simon I am listening to French tapes so I am not a total moron when I'm in Paris in June. But It is not at all the same to me.

Learning French will make you more attractive to Canada Immigration. It is also a big plus for employment, especially if you're thinking of applying with the Federal Government.
You won't find much use for it in Alberta however, but it dosen't hurt to have it on your resume. Good Luck!

Right !!! I meet Canadian-French from time to time, and if we start a conversation, I sometimes have a real hard time understanding anything they say - - the accent is atrocious. And yes, strange usage of words too, old french I suppose, French-French has evolved, Canadian-French is still 1600 French....
