So, Jesus said clearly that HE was the TRUTH and that the Scriptures are THE TRUTH.

Intolerance seems to have its origin in monotheism which began as follows: (http://mars.acnet.wnec.edu/~grempel/courses/wc1/lectures/03akhenaton.html)

Akhenaton, tried to replace the traditional, official Egyptian religion of Amarna by a new concept of god. Although still embodied in the sun, this concept, called Aton, was understood more abstractly and monotheistically. This meant that he had to make a revolution. He had to attack and destroy the traditional patterns of religion, which were thoroughly woven into every aspect of Egyptian life. He had to change the theology, ritual and ecclesiastical structure.

Akhenaton was the world's first revolutionary, and he was fully convinc ed that he might entirely recast the world of religion, thought, and life by the invincible purpose he held. Like all true revolutionaries at all times Akhenaton was fully persuaded that his ideas were right and that all men would eventually benefit by them.

    ****************************************************************

According to Josephus, the Egyptian's claimed that Moses was a high priest of this new intolerance. And the exodus was more about being run out of town on a rail. and having a major defeat re-written as an escape and liberation. While Josephus laughed it off as a crude egyptian face saving tale,

Renowned Egyptologist Jan Assmann traces the monotheism of Moses back to that of the Egyptian king Akhenaten (1360-1340 B.C.E.). He then shows how the followers of Moses denied and condemned the Egyptians as polytheistic idolaters. Thus began the cycle in whcih every "counter religion" denounced all others as false. Assmann presents a compelling lesson in the fluidity of cultural identity and beliefs.

this intolerant religion has spread its infectious and compelling beliefs where everit has spread causing much bloodshed along the way.

Not that I want to stir this up again, but I didn't see the responses until now and I do feel that I need to clarify my statement, since I obviously have offended Billygoat and possibly a few others.

    When I said:

Baptists, JWs, Pentecostals, LDS... not much different in that respect, are they?

I was not intending to be a religious bigot. Ouch! Those words hurt! That is the last thing I want to do. I was a JW for far too long to criticize anyone else's religious choices. All I meant by that statement is that no matter what religion, you're going to have people who act this way. I felt that most of us, having been JWs, could relate to how the lady, a Baptist, reacted. (I put the other two on there because I felt it rounded out the comment.) I did not intend to put a negative connotation on it, but unfortunately, that's the way it came across to some people. Try reading the statement with these words:

Puppies, kittens, goldfish, ponies... not much different in that respect, are they?

For some reason, that doesn't come across negatively. (Unless you hate puppies. ) Oh, and thanks to Willy and others who tried to help others understand what I meant.

That being said, I offer my apologies to any that I may have offended. I did not intend to express negative opinions against any religion, I merely wanted to show their similarities.

    (Billygoat, you have a PM.)
