Witches

    Hi Everyone,

I'm having a really wierd day today. For some reason I've been sitting at my computer for about an hour with a strange feeling of needing to get something out of my head and onto the page. Normally I can type it out and feel great relief, but today I can't seem to identify what it is. Has this ever happened to you?

I started this thread in the hope that as I typed I'd naturally steer myself toward talking about it, so that it would be on the page and not in my head anymore.

Until this happens I'm going to talk about witches. I really think that there is so much misunderstanding about them and there are so many people who wouldn't know a witch from a buddhist monk. Of course, the information I'm going to provide relates to the witches that I know.

By "Witch" I mean someone who practises witchcraft. That is the first and foremost definition. We are not talking about an ugly, cackling, evil woman with warts (although some witches do fit that description...LOL). Witches can be male or female. Most witches do not call male witches "warlocks".

There are many people out there who will claim to be a witch, or involved with witchcraft. Here are some ways of identifying those who are bullshitting about it and actually have never done anything except flicked through a "Silver Ravenwolf" book.

    * Witches don't tell everyone they are witches within the first 5 seconds of meeting people. In fact, I'm the most "open" witch I know but even then in my "non internet" life I don't mention it unless I'm with people I trust. Only 2 people I work with know of my current beliefs.

    * Witches don't wear black all the time.

    * Witches don't call themselves "white" or "black". Witchcraft is neither black or white.

    * Witches usually know at least something about mythology and various pantheons. They do *not* call on gods/goddesses without knowing something about them. (pseudo witches will chat about talking to Aphrodite about a love spell)

    * Witches try sorting out their problems using non-witchcraft methods FIRST and will only resort to using witchcraft when all else has failed or the thing in question is of great importance. As far as healing, all witches I know will visit the doctor first and use positive visualisation to help the healing process (not the other way around).

    * Most witches realise that attempting to control someone else is fruitless and dangerous.

    * Witches never talk about witchcraft they've performed *unless* they're with other witches (or trusted people) and always once the witchcraft has seen its outcome i.e. you've done it and seen all possible outcomes and talking about it will not disrupt that.

    * Not all witches do rituals in the nude. Some covens have a nudity rule but nowadays most allow rituals to be carried out wearing robes. Individual witches may choose to be nude during their own private rites.

    * Sex is not "open" between witches - what I mean by that is that sex is performed only between consenting adults and is viewed as sacred. All the witches I know would only have sex with their partner (the one they love). Rituals calling for sexual union are performed symbolically using a chalice and an athame.

I can't think of anything else to say.

How long has skyclad been a practice? I've heard it was only introduce in the 1950s with Gerald Gardner and the start of Wicca. And it would certainly take a tough witch to practice it with the weather we have in the North of England, lol.

I attended a talk last week about spells, amulets and charms, it was really good.

Hey Sirona, great info, I wish that more people were as smart about witchcraft as you (ok and me, I am one too) are. I have a friend who's daughter is a "witch" cause she was born a "wiccan" and that she puts "curses" on people she doesn't like. I have tried to set her straight but it is like talking to a wall.

Keep chatting Sirona, perhaps the energy you need to flow from you will come

    Blessed be

    Hi Sirona,

Congratulations on your new marriage, your pictures were beautiful.

Your thread caught my attention. My six year old daughter has been asking about witches lately. My kids always want to know what is "real" and what is made up. Zoe wants to know if witches are real. She was talking about the cackling, be-warted, black pointy hat variety. I told her that witches don't really look like that and tried to get her to understand that witches are normal people, and it's their religion. Next time she brings it up...and she will bring it up again...I'll have a few more answers to her questions. I'll probably pull up your honeymoon thread and show her your picture so she can see that witches are normal (beautiful) people and not the halloween variety.

So, what do I tell her about ghosts? LOL

    Thanks,
    Rachel

Wicca, witches, pagan, heathen, there are so many paths... within witches there are those that are gardnerian, dianic, celtic, shamanic, druid, and so many others. Personally I believe that whatever you do will come back threefold, and the creed, "and it harm none, do what you will." Other than that I'm personally more a green witch or kitchen witch with tendencies toward the dianic. That is to say I work with herbs and crystals for healing, in cooking (the herbs), and in ritual, and I don't do spellwork unless its with candles. The dianic part comes in with the fact that I believe in the divine feminine, the goddess. I'm a solitary, so I don't belong to a coven, and in the US at least most witches are solitary and do not belong to covens.

I don't tell fortunes, but I love my three tarot decks and there are a select few that I'll do a reading for, usually close friends or family. The psychic thing runs in my family, I got it more in the form of the empath, two of my brothers are pretty good at just getting a reading on people by being with them. It's really no picnic for the most part you wish you didn't have that. Until I learned to set boundaries and stay grounded I had an overload of other people's bad energy.

In the past I have seen so much on here in the negative about those of us that take this path. I realize that its out of stereotype and ignorance about witches, but still once you declare yourself you are considered a flake. Hopefully people will see that its just another belief system, spellwork is just about gathering and directing energies toward a good, much like prayer.

    Blessed be,

    Sherry

I have always found the topic very interesting. From what I have heard, there seems to be a more spiritual side than in most religions, and have always appreciated that things in nature tend to be revered, ie; earth, sun, moon, and things that the earth provides for our sustenance and enjoyment, rather than the worship of a single deity. Another interesting fact is that it has been around way before Christianity. It would be something that I would like to learn more about one day. Thanks for sharing the info!

What a great subject, Sirona! If I had to align myself with my belief and practice, I'd have to say that I am very very much like Gretchen/Sherry. I also involve shamanic views and teachings in my practice, which is as a solitary, also. I recently found a "label" so to speak that most certainly explains much of my "spiritual" views, also. Pantheism. These past six years out of the Dubs I've spent making up for lost time, educating myself about everything I have ever been fascinated with. I think I am really starting to finally bring all the pieces of my own personal puzzle together and form a coherent picture/belief system. For the record, I've always always been fascinated and open to witchcraft. Andre Norton has some awesome older books about it, that really set me on my path as a kid in school. It continued to be a fascination and belief thru my dub years, growing up, age 14 on, and became a huge source of extreme polarity, in my mind and heart because of their outmoded views in lumping it in with demonism, etc. This is one of the basic reasons I can't and won't have anything to do with the bible or Christianity to this day, because of that judgemental attitude. I too think I'm empathic, totally open and unshielded as of yet! Need to work on that, make it a priority, because lately it's been having some adverse affects in my life. Anyways, sorry to get so deep here, but, I love this stuff!

    Sherry,

I didn't know that about you. Hmmm, interesting things to talk about next time I see you! I find it all very intriguing, though I don't have an interest in the practice.

Yes, Sirona, thanks for writing about this topic. I really knew very little about "witches"...other than the cut and dry stuff we learned as a JW. This was very interesting!!!

Gretchen: Much like what Princess said, I never would have guessed!!! But, the next time we visit you can check out my energy and I hope it doesn't drain you!!!
