Hi
I live in Lancashire, England. (before you ask why it says Greater Manchester - its because I live in Lancs but its very near Manchester itself).
Ok. Here is my definition of Witchcraft. "The practise of affecting one's outer environment using visualisation processes and manipulation of energy. Physical tools are used help facilitate this process" This definition must not be confused with the religious beliefs of those following pagan paths (the religious beliefs are a way of life and not just a "practise" of doing something).
See now its clearer! LOL. OK to make it clearer: I see a spell as a "prayer with props". Say for instance you do a spell for prosperity, what you are actually doing is attempting to draw toward yourself energies which will allow prosperity into your life. Witches recognise that if they are financially struggling, there is some underlying responsibility upon the witch herself for this situation. She then attempts to clear out whatever is blocking her from being prosperous. This may mean a change in herself, or a change with regard to her job. Perhaps someone at work is holding her back? Perhaps it's her attitude toward that person. Therefore she uses creative visualisation to address the issue.
Expanding further upon this example: the witch might decide to gather together physical items to help her focus on this goal. Since money relates to the earth element (remember what I said about "as above, so below"? everything is connected on some level) she might gather "Earth" related items, such as crystals, plants (&herbs), items with earthy colours etc. and she may also consider the astrological aspects such as moon phase, what sign the moon is currently in, what sign the sun is currently in, etc. She may also use numbers relating to the goal. There are many other types of considerations but I'll leave it at that for now. Basically this process helps to facilitate psychological and "energy" changes which will help the prosperity to enter her life.
When she has gathered her tools and worked out that the time is right, she will use the tools to focus and raise / release energy. This part is the hardest and it can take years to practise and gain the focus required. It also can take years of practise to "see" or "feel" the energy and know how/if/why the spell worked or didn't. THAT is why someone who reads a love spell out of a book and buys the pink petals and the lavendar usually finds that their spell doesn't work - because it isn't about the petals and the lavendar - its about the person's intent and focus!
Sometimes an inexperienced person can produce results, if they have enough desire for the goal and especially if the goal is a true need.
So that is my definition of the practise of Witchcraft. If you're going to do something like that it does of course stand to reason that you'll have certain beliefs, but I do not think that Witchcraft in itself is a religion. I've met witches who were raised to use these techniques even though it did not relate to religion at all. I don't even think one of them observed any seasonal changes or anything like that. Wicca, on the other hand, involves Gods and faith and does not require spellworking at all.
