Well..In the OT Jehovah gave the green light to stonings and the massacre of complete nations man, woman and child...not too much mention of games other than the Priests playing craps with the Urim and Thummin...they had all the fun as they made the rules.

The NT agrees bodily training is beneficial for a little...a little what I'm not sure.....and its not as important as bodily functions mind you but still it seems a little activity is condoned...maybe Jehovah is a good Sport....nah!

This happened to a small group of Christian youths who decided to go for a hike. They veered off the trail and began climbing a narrow edge on a steep cliff. Before long they found themselves virtually trapped, unable to go safely either forward or backward. The youth leading the group then heard a sudden noise. Two of his companions had fallen to their death. How tragic!

ugh....leave it to the Witlesses to throw a little story in there to make you swear off it for good. like the story in the bible about birthdays that my grandma used repeatedly whenever i was bummed about not getting to celebrate (the one where Herod's wife had the head of John the Baptist cut off for her birthday).

But uh, yeah...welcome to you too, Brother Bennett...I don't think sports cause violence. You can draw correlations where ever you want to, doesn't mean it's a cause.

Correlations can give a person an idea of what kind of sport is right to play and progress at. The cause to play it or not is still based upon the Christians attitude and conscience. To gather the entire high school for football spirit day in order to get pumped up or a person taking drugs to improve performance might not be the best Christian attitude. That was the idea I wanted to convey so it can have implications for the other sports available. It would be better to stay away from areas that have high cases of violence instead of spending so much time perfecting a self defence move. It is true that conditions are getting worse and worse, most Bible students agree on that. Even if you have many moves perfected, all it takes these days is a gun or a gang of people to destroy your chance of defending yourself. So it would depend on the persons well being and attitude to not have pressure into developing ones body just to defend against this wicked world we all live in. And in order to stay fine tuned, it requires the person to keep at it which I find to be a brutal challenge. Many sports have progressive stages like chess, the black belts would be the same as being a red player in chess. Is it worth all that time? Some people are very fit but they can still have a heart attack. It is good to find balance in all you do since the Bible promises a better life in the future.

So, your take is that you shouldn't be enthusiastic about playing in a game? That there's something wrong with getting "pumped up" for a game? As for the drugs, that's not exactly a common occurence as you may think, as tough as testing is.

That was the idea I wanted to convey so it can have implications for the other sports available. It would be better to stay away from areas that have high cases of violence instead of spending so much time perfecting a self defence move.

Some of us live in tough neighborhoods and deal with dangerous situations...

It is true that conditions are getting worse and worse, most Bible students agree on that.

...not us...crime has gone DOWN for the past decade...

Even if you have many moves perfected, all it takes these days is a gun or a gang of people to destroy your chance of defending yourself.

...so just give up any hope of defending yourself?

So it would depend on the persons well being and attitude to not have pressure into developing ones body just to defend against this wicked world we all live in. And in order to stay fine tuned, it requires the person to keep at it which I find to be a brutal challenge.

...Ever think it might not just be for a violent end? that it may be a way of keeping in shape?

Many sports have progressive stages like chess, the black belts would be the same as being a red player in chess. Is it worth all that time?

If you love it, it is...Some people have hobbies and interests as a way of testing and improving ourselves.

Some people are very fit but they can still have a heart attack. It is good to find balance in all you do since the Bible promises a better life in the future.

Balance...the old fall back of the hard-liner...

Bodily training is good for a little ass, remember???

    1 Tim 4:8

"For bodily training is beneficial for a little, but godly devotion is beneficial for all things"

Praise be to Jehover that I just joined a gym

I practice Martial Arts as well. We do not practice with punching or kicking, we use joint locks and the uke's ki until the uke taps out.

    Don't forget about Chess!!!

Just when you think you've made a joke...

    *** g73 3/22 p. 14 Chess?What Kind of Game Is It? ***

    The Need for Caution

Some chess players have recognized the harm that can result from playing the game. According to The Encyclopædia Britannica, the religious reformer "John Huss, . . . when in prison, deplored his having played at chess, whereby he had lost time and run the risk of being subject to violent passions."

The extreme fascination of chess can result in its consuming large amounts of one?s time and attention to the exclusion of more important matters, apparently a reason Huss regretted having played the game. Also, in playing it there is the danger of "stirring up competition with one another," even developing hostility toward another, something the Bible warns Christians to avoid doing.

Then, too, grown-ups may not consider it proper for children to play with war toys, or at games of a military nature. Is it consistent, then, that they play a game noted to be, in the opinion of some, an "intellectualized equivalent of the maneuvers enacted by little boys with toy soldiers"? What effect does playing chess really have upon one? Is it a wholesome effect?

Surely chess is a fascinating game. But there are questions regarding it that are good for each one who plays chess to consider.
