Letter From President George W. Bush

Well, prophecor, now that the elections are over there's got to be SOMETHING for the Republicans and Democrats to argue about! And I suppose whether or not Georgy Porgy handwrites his own letters is as good a topic as any, and probably less inflammatory than some we've had in the past.

Now, on the subject of personal responses, I have a Dallas Cowboys story to tell: once upon a time, a long, long time ago I fell and broke my foot (broke the first two metatarsals and ripped all the ligaments). Chris said that Russell Maryland had the same type of injury, so I thought, hmmm, I'll bet his wonderful highly paid sports doctors did some good therapy on his foot so I sat down and wrote him a letter (not handwritten, typed, in case it matters) asking for advice on how to get my foot back in shape.

A YEAR AND A HALF LATER I received an autographed photograph of Russell Maryland. No letter, no advice, just an autographed 4X6 photo.

I'm sure he signed it himself.

If people choose to believe that they recieved a "personal" letter from the president then I am happy for you and hope that you did in fact have that honor. The truth of the matter however is that anyone who volunteeres or contributes to the campaign gets a letter....maybe they were not all worded exactly the same (all of the ones that I have seen have been however) or maybe they had several versions based on your contribution level...whatever. The likelyhood of the president actually sitting down and personally writting thousands of letters to individuals is a bit unrealistic. Yes he does write personal letters to specific people for specific reasons but not on such a mass mailing level as this.

Related to xmas cards - the same rule applies -- they send out litterally millions of generic cards, signed by auto pen and then for friends, dignitaries and other very limited situations they take the time to sign them personally.

The auto pen is actually pretty ingenious. It actually writes (using a device similar to a plotter) an exact duplicate of the persons letter or signature. So it is not some white house aid using a computer to type a letter on someone's behalf, it is actually the president or other official who writes/signs the letter and then has it duplicated using the auto pen.

It is not my intent to act like I know everything as some have suggested, I can only speak from my personal experience. I am fairly active politically both in my home state and at the national level and have had the privilege of receiving both the auto pen and personal versions of letters and cards from several presidents and other politicos.

George can write?? Other than signing his name, of course.

    Hillary,

I usually agree with you, but this time I think you could be wrong.

It is obvious that the president was very, very busy lately.

After all it took him three or was it four days to find the time to publicly acknowledge the tsunami and thousands of deaths in

I think he was just too busy writing these important letters. I do hope the Asians (whose hearts and minds he is trying to win) fully understand the importance of the letters.

    Damn him !!

Now all I need to know is who really killed JFK, and how they faked the moon landings.

I don't know the JFK thing but I have it on good authority that they faked the moon landings with smoke and mirrors and a little help from some little green men.

    rwaggoner,

Don't get too technical now, people might start spontaneously combusting.

An interesting development in the genre of stereotyped signatures was the one that Robert Louis Stevenson made in the early C20th. Previously such signatures were invariably signed in the same color as the text on the page, but he produced a limited edition novel in which the signatures was signed in blue ink, and the rest of the text was in black. I have seen that signature fool some collectors even today.

Be assured though, that like the Presidential thank you letters noted throughout this thread, it was not an original signature.

    Best regards - HS

I know this is probably over kill, and bringing back to the top a stale post several days old,

but GW has been using ghost writers to write to others besides his constituants"

This is from a more recent thread: (Sorry I don't have the title, I will lose this post if I go back to find it)

    6. Ghostwriters for Bush

In August, the Daily Kos weblog uncovered an astroturf (fake grassroots) initiative by the George W. Bush reelection campaign, which generated ghostwritten letters to the editor that found their way into at least 60 newspapers. This wasn't the first time that the Bush administration tried this trick, as we've reported in the past. According to Editor and Publisher, however, the National Conference of Editorial Writers (NCEW) is now taking the issue seriously. "On its NCEW e-mail listserv , some 600 subscribers who are mostly editorial page writers and editors, can alert one another of suspicious letters," writes Charles Geraci. "In fact, this is the most consistent topic on the listserv."

No doubt there are automatic writers, and a staff that helps.

No question that many of letters and cards received are not actually signed by the President.

But for anyone to automatically assume that all of them are fake, is silly. Especially when those saying it don't really know.

In all seriousness, were you there when it was signed? Are you looking at the letter? Where do you get off thinking that you know what the real story is??

Is it possible, that maybe the President has written a few real notes? Yes, and it makes logical sense that someone got the note after it was written.

Yes, I agree, probably greater than 99.99% of all the notes and letters are not written by the President himself.

If some of you recall, President Reagan was well known for writing many, many personal notes and letters.

Just amuses me, as mentioned before, for anyone to absolutely say, with certainty, that Sheila did not get a real note from the President.

    Sheila: Good for you!

Got one today - it is certainly a printing of a handwritten original. It was still a nice touch. Even nicer was the note at the bottom: Not printed at taxpayers expense...

But Sheila IS from Texas; maybe she actually knows somebody that is somehow connected to the Bushes?
