Valis, that type of bath sounds good---even if I didn't have gout!

I had a first crisis last summer. The standard treatment here is called "Colchimax", it's made of colchicine, tiemonium methylsulfate and opium powder; take three tablets the first day, then one a day during a week.

Of course this is just the crisis treatment. I guess you know about the rest (diet and/or anti-purines)

Friends of mine swear by apple cider vinegar.

I found this on a web site:

7 Readers have found success. (Note: Must take daily.)

Phil, from Wales, UK emailed us the following: "I have been taking 2 Tablespoons cider vinegar plus 1 Tablespoon of honey in 1/2 cup of boiled water 3 times a day for the last 3-4 weeks, plus doing chi kung exercises and have been able to stop taking piroxicam for gout (I've got the tablets nearby just in case!). I use Aspells organic cider vinegar - I live in Wales so Bragg's cv is presumably not available."

There are certain foods that you need to stay away from like meat. Kings and nobility usually got gout because they ate meat so much of the time. There are also certain types of seafood too.

Min, My gout was caused by other medication I was taking. I think it was maxide. If I were you, I'd check with the pharmacist if you are taking any other medications. I changed some other stuff around and I never had another gout attack.

Min, I've had more gout attacks than I can count. I've had them in my feet, knees, elbows, and a couple of kidney stones. It was after the kidney stones that they finally gave me allopurinol.

I also took indomethicin for flare-ups, with varying degrees of success.

About 8 years ago I had a flare up and the doc told me to completely abstain from alcohol, so I did. The gout attack didn't subside with medication and I walked with a cane for 3 months. Finally I was just so pissed off that I decided to go to a bar and kill the pain there. I drank 4 pints of Smithwicks and went home. Next day the gout was gone.

Not that I'm suggesting alcohol. It was probably my increased intake of fluid. Try drinking a lot of water.

SixofNine is right about the cherry thing. I came down with a case of the ol' gout and cherries took it away in a jiffy. If you can find cherry juice that will help also. Careful when mixing opiate pain medications.
