Buying Ray's book and having a physical copy in your possession is part of the process of exiting dubdom. It's a rite of passage.
It signals that you are ready to take responsibility for your actions and that you are prepared to endure the consequences of your very own crisis of conscience. It would be a bad idea to miss out on this opportunity.
Go ahead and buy the book. It's still a free country.
The pdf would be for the benefit of those currently sitting on the fence. It appears that those types of JW are growing with each passing day (I'm sure the JWD can take some credit for this as well). Even though anyone is free to purchase it in book form, many are reluctant to actively do something like that. It's a lot easier to right click and do a "Save target as..." on your PC. It's the convenience factor
Those of us who have read the book already know, once you start reading you cant stop.
If you can't afford the book, check at your local library. If they don't have it, put in a request for them to purchase it. That's what I did. In the meantime, someone loaned me a copy.
But, now it will be at the public library ------> who knows how many may read it?
There is so much information freely available on the internet about the watchtower that there's really no need to start infringing on Ray's ownership of his work. His prices are more than reasonable - just compare the price of his books compared to that of any computer book. I certainly would not want to deny an elderly gentleman his lawful renumeration for his work.
I have not met him personally - though we communicate by email. I have noticed that his 'vigor' seems to be reduced some now due to age - if fact he admitted as much to me not long ago. Emails are slower than they used to be.... ect.
I think the idea is good - esp for the 'fence sitters' you mention -since a book is harder to conceal for those with family still in and strong, living in the same house.
Perhaps someone here with the internet savvy and time would be willing to work a deal with Ray so that no one gets harmed financially to get it done? Just a thought.
: Since he doesn't make a profit anyways, I'm sure he wouldn't mind a free pdf version distributed via the internet. In fact, he may even encourage it. You're not listening and thinking clearly about what you're told. Given that Ray has to sell books just to break even on all of his publishing expenses, if he sold no more books, he'd be losing a substantial amount of money.
Now, I'd love to see CoC in a PDF version online. But that would cut down hugely on book sales and leave Ray in the hole. Whatever, it's Ray's decision. Given the realities of having to make a living and paying real expenses, if anyone has good suggestions for solving the financial problems, let's hear them. AlanF
Yeah Ray was emailing me for a while during my exist and stuff. I don't write him anymore because I know he just gets swamped with mail. He's a super nice guy.
hmm...well what about the same protection music companies put on cd so they can't be copied? I know I have some albums that stop me from copying them and instead of copying, they pop up with something about buying Microsoft Extra Licenses. That way if someone wanted to give it to another person it would be just like giving them a hard copy. One also wonders what happens to Commentary Press when Ray passes on, which in itself will be a sad day, but one hopes there is something that can be done to keep his book in print or at least distributed in electronic format.
This piece of work is too important to have it stopped being printed/distributed. We cant let that happen.
Does anyone knows what happens legally to intellectual property once a book is no longer in print and the author has passed away? Does it become the ownership of the public domain and free to distribute?
