I find it amusing that people who have never produced a book or are too cheap to pay for a copy of a book can come up with so many "good" reasons why the book should be free.
As AlanF has explained, self-publishing is not a zero cost enterprise. But these arguments are wasted on those who have never produced anything. They believe that roasted chickens should just fly into their mouths.
Now, print-on-demand publishers are making it possible for people to "self-publish" without the huge investment that such a project once entailed. There is no need to buy a scadzillion copies of your book to be sure it remains available. Don Cameron's "Captives of a Concept" was such a project, handled by the very capable folks at LULU.COM. If anyone thinks they have a book in them, LULU can help get it out!
Yes, a book can be published in e-form, but pdf is a poor choice of format >>IF<< you have concerns about protecting the integrity of your work. The password protection of pdf files is easily penetrated beause Adobe sees such protection as a "gentleman's handshake," not as a bulwark against piracy. Maybe a future version of Acrobat will offer some REAL security.
Some people have participated in projects that produced free copies of old Watchtower publications, only to discover that some current Jehovah's Witnesses were SELLING the work on eBay. It must be nice to do absolutely no work and reap a profit from those who don't know any better.
Right now the copyright term is 95 years. After 95 years the work goes into the public domain. Until then, the work is considered the property of the person who created it, and it can be treated like any other property. It can be sold (or given) to the publishing house, or it can be part of a person's estate, and passed (for the remainder of the 95 year term) to heirs or beneficiaries. Once the 95 years are up, though, the work become public domain. Public domain works cannot be copyrighted by anyone, although some do try to, without legal grounds.
Most of the books available under Project Guttenberg are already in the public domain. An author can choose to put his work into the public domain immediately, but that is his choice to make, not the choice of a freeloader.
Edited to correct spelling error: "chiskens" should have been "chickens."

I totally agree..
If you want it free, go check it out from the public library..
I hope if there is a free version out there w/o Ray's concent, that Simon does not allow the link here..
as well as filters out any pms that might use his site to share it..
does anyone care what Ray went through? or appreciate the expense that it cost him to share this story? we should be sending him donations just thanking him...

Since he doesn't make a profit anyways, I'm sure he wouldn't mind a free pdf version distributed via the internet. In fact, he may even encourage it. I have an idea, why not make it PDF and have an OPTION for a contribution for Ray? I'm sure there would be many who would make such a donation. The book has been out for a while so going PDF could not hurt anything. I tend to agree that the time has come for it to go PDF. Perhaps I will contact Ray and ask him ;-). Even so, the information is so very powerful that it can no longer be kept from e-form distrubtion. It would not be to hard even for me to create such a file. FDS

Sounds like a great idea. Moving forward, Franz wont need to print any more hard copies. He can sell off the remaining ones already printed and receive donations from a pdf version online.
This way he wont have to invest any money in printing advance copies, the message will be more accessible and since there will be so little overhead (website hosting and maintenance fees) the contributions will more than cover his daily expenses.
Since he's already barely breaking even as some of you say with the current system, this may even HELP him out financially.

I agree, people are not reading what Alan said
You're not listening and thinking clearly about what you're told. Given that Ray has to sell books just to break even on all of his publishing expenses, if he sold no more books, he'd be losing a substantial amount of money.
He has books he has ALREADY paid for he needs to recover expenses for..
and the other thing is..
I'm sorry, but there is a stronger sense to reading a hard cover book.. than just having something on your computer screen or on print outs..

Let me try to explain this in a way that even you retards might understand:
Retain a lawyer. You'll need one.
You two have demonstrated that you know nothing about copyright LAW, that you comprehend nothing about the underlying principles of property rights, and that you have no respect for the creators of value (in this case, Ray Franz).

Some authors are allowing a PDF available for download for free or with a contribution. These authors also maintain a hard copy version of their book from the same site. Even if Ray had a sizable number hard copies, he could still sell them like other people are doing and have a downloadable version. Personally, I would have a PDF version as you have a lot less overhead to selling that way.
