Alan has stopped short of doing the I-Net equivalent of shouting (ALL CAPS) about the economic realities that Ray has to deal with. But he did repeat himself and bolded some of his comments.
Those economic realities may always be the last word/bottom line, in this world or any other. Just check into how insurance really works and what it influences to see that truism
In lieu of the pdf format here are two things to consider:
How about a "hotline" to discuss the topics with any one interested? This might be like those suicide crisis center phones. Whoever did this would have to keep the "economic realities" in mind, too.
Secondly, let?s consider the initial premise: that COC is "too dangerous to leave lying around". Well. I can feature this and have experienced/observed something of the sort, so I won?t dispute that.
But, eventually the person ready to leave is going to have to make some hard decisions and more difficult changes. Perhaps they can "chat" their way over the fence, for a stopgap.
Further, they may consider going off for a "sabbatical" to some place "safe" for their purposes. They could even have a friend/other 3 rd party keep COC for them.
This all sounds like an "underground railroad", ala Civil War times. Actually, there is nothing wrong w/ that!!!

Some books are available free. The book I wrote is entitled 'Opening the Door to Jehovah's Witnesses.' ISBN 0954018206 Paper back copies are available from me, but as this is a non-profit making venture, I am prepared to e-mail an electronic version, FREE OF CHARGE to any member of this Discussion group.
You will be allowed to send this on to anyone you choose, provided it is not for profit. you will need a fast download facility and the Acrobat/Adobe programme to read this. If you would like the free download Just e-mail me directly- [email protected]
I've just bought "Captives of a Concept" by Don Cameron (ex-JW Elder) as an e-book. The book would have cost printed $12.49, but as an e-book it cost me $5, I then printed it off. The reason I got it as an e-book is because it wasn't available here in Britain as far as I could find out.
I'm sure if "Crisis of Conscience" was available as an e-book, it would reach many more people. JW's wouldn't have to sneak into a bookshop to buy a copy. They could download on to a disk and keep it safe and private.
But as has been said it is Ray Franz's means of a small income. After all what did the WT give him for the years of service he did. Do they have a pension scheme for members of Bethel etc. Did he "earn" enough as a JW to have savings?
I think we owe it to Ray for what he has done, by writing his two books. They have helped free many from the Watchtower.
Tatt. It's a good question. And agreed it would definately make it more easily available to more JWs who are curious. But the compensation to Ray is an issue that seems to have no easy answers, yet.
If I remember correctly from my Dad, Ray had to build a garage to store the minimum number of books he wanted printed. Even though the building was constructed with some volunteer labour. It was just one example of the costs incurred.

No, no one said that in this thread, and furthermore, he does not make an income from his books. Doesn't anybody actually read posts? If he sells all the books from one printing, he does a bit more than cover expenses.
Suppose you published a book and invested $50,000 in it. Would you consider recouping your investment as income? Of course not.

I heard you Alan (and UNDERSTOOD)
To vallis, The CD's that you can't burn directly can still be copied by making an audio rip into your sound card, obtaining a promo copy, or by buying a Canadian version of the CD (Canadians are legally allowed to make one copy of a CD for a personal backup).
If it's that easy to copy a CD can you only imagine how easy it would be to pirate a pdf?
Privacy issues aside, have you ever tried to read an entire 200+ page novel online? You're eyes will give out after 20 pages or so. Printing it would take alomst your entire $12 ink cartridge and about half of a $10 ream of paper. One drop of water and the entire thing is ruined. For that much cost you might as well just buy the damn thing.
Not only that, but think about what the society would do if they knew the book was on pdf. Someone from the writing department would write their own version of COC anonymously and alter the text in a way that would slander and discredit Ray Franz. (look at how many "official" versions of 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix' showed up on pdf right before the novel was released).
In short it really wouldn't be worth it. besides, if maximum security inmantes can smuggle in drugs and weapons into their cell without getting caught then any JW who really wants to buy a copy of crisis of conscience will be able to find a way as well.
A great way to distribute books, music, etc is with the Creative Commons license. Another is Project Gutenburg. They publish a lot of books on the Internet.
I am personally in contact with Ray regarding the possibility of making CoC available online.
More news as events warrant.
