WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE TERRI SCHIAVO CASE?

Michael Schiavo wants Terri dead because he wants to destroy the evidence that he was a wife-abuser. The parents want to prove this, but he will not allow that to happen. Evidence may show that Terri was strangled and THAT is why she is in this condition right now.

Bullshit. She had an eating disorder (bulimia) that weakened her heart and that's what caused it to stop, which deprived her brain of oxygen and brought on her current state. There's absolutely no evidence at all that her husband was abusing her.

While I think this poor woman should be allowed to die in peace, I think that starving her to death is barbaric. Surely there's a better way to let her die than this. We wouldn't let our pets suffer like this---we'd take them to the vets and as painful as it would be, you have them put to sleep so that they're not suffering anymore.

I've been watching the Terri Schiavo situation unfold down in Clearwater this past week. I'm very concerned that she has had her feeding tube removed by the courts and is being slowly dehydrated/starved to death. There is now an emergency bill in the U.S. house of representatives that could save Terri's life. I am urging everyone to write their Senators and House members to urge that they pass this bill. The House will be taking up the bill again on Monday so I urge you to take a few minutes this weekend and send an email to your reps. In case you are not familiar with Terri's situation, here are the facts as I know them: Terri is a 41 year old woman who had a medical crisis (her heart stopped) about 15 years ago, which left her with severe brain damage. During this time Terri has not been on any life support (ventilator, etc.) except for the feeding tube placed in her stomach. Her body functions normally and she is physically healthy. Terri's parents visit her daily, and they believe she responds to them. According to the family, 33 physicians have signed affidavits stating that Terri, although severely brain damaged, is not in a coma or a "persistent vegetative state." They further state that with appropriate therapies Terri will likely show significant improvement in function. According to her parents, Terri's nurses have likewise concluded that improvement is possible, and also believe that she is to some degree aware of her surroundings, and appears to be happy and in no pain. (If you've seen the the CNN reports, Terri appears to smile when her mother talks to her.) Michael Schiavo, Terri's husband, has been working since about 1993 to have her feeding tube removed, and to allow her to die. Michael claims that during his marriage to Terri she had stated that she did not want to be kept alive in the event of a medical catastrophe that would leave her unable to function without 'all the tubes', etc. Michael claims she made this statement not only to him but also to his brother and to her best friend. In all, Michael claims she made this statement to a total of six individuals (three of whom have not been identified). Now, assuming this alleged statement by Terri is true, I find it very hard to believe that she had given this issue a great deal of thought. She would have been, at the oldest, 26 when she made these statements, and at 26 I doubt she could have considered all the possible medical scenarios. Further, had she felt this strongly about this this issue, I believe that she would have seen an attorney to compose an "Advanced Medical Directive," which would be a legally binding document. There are also the facts concerning Michael Schiavo's possible financial motivation for wanting Terri's feeding tube removed. After Terri's medical crisis Michael sued and was awarded about $2.3 million. The stated purpose of the lawsuit was to obtain funds to care for Terri for the remainder of her life. According to Terri's parents, after Michael was awarded the money, he then refused to allow Terri any rehabilitation therapy that certainly would have shown whether it was possible for her to regain functioning. Shortly after winning the lawsuit Michael then began proceedings to have Terri's feeding tube removed. Terri's parent, the Schindler's, are of course opposed to having the feeding tube removed. The Schindler's are strong Catholics, and Terri was raised in the Catholic faith. They are very much against euthanasia, and believe that Terri would not want to be euthanized under these circumstances. I urge you to contact your House representative and your Florida senators to urge them to intervene to save Terri's life. Go to www.terrisfight.org for more information about this. Also, please pass this email on to everyone you know. Today its Terri's fight, tomorrow it could be yours or mine. (Below I've copied my short letter to my state representative. If you wish to use all or part in a letter to your legislators, you have my permission. Thanks again for your help!) ============================================================================================================ RE: TERRI SCHIAVO Dear Rep. Taylor, I am writing to urge you to do everything in your power to pass the bill now under consideration that may save Terri Schiavo's life. This young woman has been severely brain damaged for about 15 years, but according to her family, 33 independent physicians have given affidavits that her condition is not irreversible, and that given appropriate therapies, she has a good chance for significant improvement. According to Terri's mother and father, although Terri's husband Michael received a multi-million dollar settlement, he has NOT allowed Terri to receive any rehabilitation therapy. In my mind, as long as there is any chance that a person could have a meaningful life, even in a limited way, that life should be honored and preserved. Thank you in advance for your consideration of this very important issue. Sincerely, Bill Rosenke

I don't like it at all, that the government can step in and "adjust" the person's wishes to their own morality.

I hope they let this go. After all this time (15 years) they should let her go.

She has no life and after that amount of time, is rehabilitation even possible?

Too many people are being supported, on life support, who should be gone.

You asked my opinion, and that is it.

I had an elderly aunt, who was dying of cancer, and her children, my cousins, made the decison to stop hydration and nutrition and let her die. She was drugged so that it wasn't an ordeal for her. She died in less than 3 days. I thought it was very dignified and took tremendous courage on their parts. She wasn't aware of it at all. Terry is also in hospice and I think they will do the same for her. She will not suffer. It is not barbaric. Hospice is wonderful and they make sure the patient is comfortable.

Lot of the "facts" you just spit out were opinion...if it is your opinion great but do not state here are the facts accusing her husband of such horrible things when most of it is just pure specualtion.

I just wrote Sam Graves. Terri is not in a vegatative coma, she has not received any rehabilitation since 1991. Her husband has another life. WHY can't her family care for her. She is not on a ventilator just a feeding tube. Starving her to death is inhumane. Thunder has told me his wishes but if he was in this condition, I would love him until he passed not try to kill him.

2 sides to all stories. I have read all the parents/siblings claims ... the husband claims other. If this is about money why has he turned down offers of millions to walk away? supposedly there IS no life insurance. If she did, at 26, request not to be kept alive then it should be honored. 26 IS old enough, IMO, to make this decision. When you marry, parents give up legal rights to spouse. What is his motivation? spite?

for every doctor the parents side has to make a claime, the husband side has a differing one. How many court decisions does this take?

More than anything it should encourage all of us to make our wishes known and documented. As far as congress, they should stay the hell out of it. That is what our judicial branch is for.

    TheOneBuck,

I am working on a post that will back-up what I said. I was on my way out the door to work this morning and that was all I had time to say.

I DID back that up with a link to a website so that people could do their OWN research, but it appears that NO ONE has even bothered to read the information that is available from that website!

So that is what I have been doing since I returned home from work.

I will post this information when it is ready.

I don't think we know what Terri's wishes are. It's her husband's word against her parents. If it's not in writing, than she shouldn't be starved to death. I suggest her husband, judge and lawyer stop eating and see if it's as easy as they claim.

The following is another story with similar issues but involving a Jehovah's Witness. I find it very interesting. She is a very compassionate woman. "Florida mother believes son understood, responded while in a coma for 22 years."

On the merits of the case, I agree with the husband.

But here's the part that really bothers me: why is Congress getting involved? The decision in this matter was up to the Florida courts, who ruled for the husband. The parents didn't like that, and so they lobbied the Florida legislature to pass a bill--a special, exceptional bill just for Terri Schiavo's case. Since that didn't work, now they want the US Congress to pass a bill--again, a special, exceptional bill just for Schiavo's case. This is getting ridiculous.

If we have any respect for the rule of law, we need to stop treating this case as a political football and let the decision of the Florida courts stand.
