Talesin and bikerchic, you've given us some food for thought. Thanks for sharing your experiences. I hope others get to read them.
BaryB, as to being intellectual, nah, down to earth person is all I want to be. The school of hard knocks is a great school.
Keep the experiences coming.

This is an interesting thread and I'm still not sure if I fully understand exactly what the gist is, who or what is being rebelled against. I agree that people should be true to themselves, not doormats and most of the other comments made so far. Self actualization is great and I fully endorse it.
However, I think it is very easy to judge people as spineless, gutless, or whatever without fully understanding the sort of pressures that might be exerted on them. There are people here that are afraid of losing their children, their siblings, their parents etc. That is some pretty powerful leverage that might make a person decide to go along to get along. Being a rebel is all well and good when that makes one a millionaire, but what about when standing up for what you think can cost you everything you've ever worked for, or cost you the chance to ever speak to your children? Deciding you are not going to take any crap in a relationship or a job is one thing, putting your life on the line or sacrificing your children is something else altogether.
Just wanted to throw that out there.

Big dog, being a free thinker labels you as being a rebel. Others such as groups or org's have to think for you. What is fear based on?

Golf, I'm all for free thinking, can't have enough of that in my opinion. Not sure though what you meant with the fear question though.

Big Dog, true love casts fear out. Really, what kind of life is it to be a witness when fear controls you? The religion is depriving of you of what the Creator gave you, free choice. Am I still unclear?

Golf, no you are being very clear, I understand what you are saying. I agree that living a life of fear is not desirable and if you do that you are giving up your free will. If that fear is being generated strictly out of their doctrine, do as we say or God will destroy you, I fully agree with all of your statements.
My only caveat was that if one is going along with the JW program out of fear of say potentially losing contact with their children, then I could sympathize with that and see why they might be willing to do that.

Big Dog, yes, and what kind of life is that? In one hand the witnesses preach about Satan's control over mankind, yet, not realizing that their being controlled themselves! Where's your freedom? This is a life of existence, not really and fully enjoying the gift of life.
How many were and are truly happy and comfortable in the org?
"Let each one do just as he has resolved in his heart, not grudgingly or under 'compulsion', for God loves a cheerful giver." 2 Cor.9:7
"But without your consent I do not want to to do anything, so that your good act may be, not as under 'compulsion', but of your own free will." Philemon 14
Where are these 'free' will and 'cheerful' givers? How can you have free will and be a cheerful giver if your under 'compulsion?'

but nobody is free from everything not even you golf....we all accept certain rules..eg the laws of the land even though we might not agree with them because we know the consequences of breaking them would be having all our freedom taken away which would rob us of the chance to enjoy the things we enjoy...not all the rules and traditions of golf (the game not you) make sense but to rebel against them would mean we wouldnt get to play something we love...so we compromise....and there are plenty here and elsewhere that are doing that rather than lose things they enjoy and they are not nessercarally being miserable about it...so stop being condescending because not everyone is a rebel and we wont condemn you for not being able to understand that
