LT - I love red: strawberry....

and yes, I was once in Scotland and noticed the antagonism towards the English... but that was when visiting a monument dedicated to "Braveheart"

some 40 years ago we were in Belgium while there were festivities... honouring what ? their freedom from the Dutch... Belgium and the Netherlands were one country in the past.....

Even today, there are some lunetics who thinks that Friesland - one of our northern provinces - should be "on their own" they did succeed in a way that they have lots more to tell in politics then the other parts of the Netherlands are having. One funny part is that the language: Fries or Frysk in their tongue is now an official language in the Netherlands. And a consequence of that is that their capital, Leeuwarden today has mentioned their name at the edge of the city twice: Ljouwert is the Frysk version. And now they are happy..... (I think)

You are right, some events are gaining a life of their own, and while it is good to teach our youth what has happened in the past (if only to prevent it happen again) some people seemed (sp) to hold a grudge.

As far of the festivities in that little Belgium town: I think they only wanted an excuse to party today....

Branda:It would appear that in some cases the feeling is mutual.
Personally I can't stand those arbitary kind of divides, though I do have a little fun with it here

    Fleaman:
Whereas we know what the Americans mean by jello, most of them would expect we were talking about jam, if I had used the word jelly.

LT, of the "doing his bit for universal comprehension" class

Thanks a lot for the map, CW.

I can't believe I had never heard of your little corner there, we were practically neighbors! Of course I was quite young when I lived there and never went much further than Breskens with the ferry boat. (We'd jump on the boat on Sundays and go back and forth from Breskens to Vlissingen, just because it was something fun to do).

HAHAHAHAHA that sounds like Belgium indeed. Have you ever been to the famous "Gentse Feesten"? It's a huge party throughout the city and it lasts 10 days and 10 nights. (It's always in July). .

And now I have to stop talking about places like that, (especially Walcheren), homesickness sneaks up pretty easily, even after all those years.

I was flabbergasted and practically wanted to nominate them for a statue. Now, my reaction to them is actually what pisses me off ..... cuz each and every one coming to this country should be like that. But fact of the matter is that that family was an exeption to the general

I think that everyone will agree here. As I said before, people who move to a different country and show their total lack of interest in society by not learning the language, that just isn't right. I hear you on being mad at yourself for such thoughts. It's like giving a kid a piece of candy because he does his homework. Well, there's no merit in that, as it is a task that should be done anyway.

You will notice that the ones who do speak Dutch are also the ones who will give a hand when something needs to be done in the neighborhood. I've seen Turkish store keepers in Belgium, who only spoke Turkish. I even remember going to a Turkish store to pick up some spices you can't buy in other stores, and feeling as if I was on vacation or something. It's sad when you go to the grocery store right around the corner from where you live, and the workers at the store don't speak your language. Something is wrong with that picture.
