  Hi Amazing;

  I do agree that the whole debate about polution is hypocritical, and the EU is no saint. 98% of the money spent on "polution" is spent on places that is of little importance, CO2 as one example.

  The last eruption of the vulcano Panutiba in the Philiphines poluted about the same as all cars in the world running in 100.000 years!

  We can't deny vulcanos, but we should spend the money for fighting polution in a better way. Countries like the US is actually the biggest problem in such things - because this really will make some trouble for some dear industries.

  Nobody is perfect, and the US isn't either. How much do they own the UN? On the other hand, they payed for most of the money in Operation Dessert Storm, but that was a political decition. Good for election - and good for playing the Worlds Police-man. The same in Bosnia and stuff.

  Fact is - we need wars to make the industry happy, and to make world economy "good". We need to get rid of weapons, bombs and rockets, to make US weapon factories happy. Then we can play pilice for a while, and pretend to be the "good guys" - even if we're just defending our own interests, right?

  It's the same thing with the Kyoto stuff. As long as Big Brother doesn't like it - he won't agree. Land-mines, CO2, war, bombs - doesn't matter.

  Money make the world go round, and that's it. Who the hell cares if a few thousand "nobodies" somewhere will be killed?

  Global Warming is no problem today. And who has the answer for the "best" temperature on earth? On Spitsbergen, near the North Pole, there has been palm trees! It was warmer before - so is this global warming - or is the globe adjusting to normal?

  I and millions of other Brits saw and heard a BBC news report where Bush stated into a TV camera that Kyoto was definitely against American business interests, and that he would not go along with anything that might have a negative effect upon the American economy.

  True. The same was shown over and over in Norway. Bush DID say that - no doubt about it. No other excuses - just negative effect on the US economy.

  Amazing, Re a "weak office", I would be very interested in hearing more about this. Our own UK government has a similar thing, the monarchy being useful in that it limits power.

  Also, I'm still eagerly anticipating your info re your Celtic connections.

  Dearest Englishman--

  Many of us here in America are none to pleased with our current president and his corporate America cabinet. There are many who were duped into voting for him but they deserve our sympathy not our scorn. They believe in a party who was stupid enough to throw-over an independent-thinking, I'll-do-what-I-think-is-right-damn-the-big-money sort of guy like McCain, (who btw would have drawn vast support from both major parties), for a guy who merely proved his fundraising abilities. The same party who endorsed Bob-I'll-do-anything-for-a-buck-Dole for president (read Senator for Sale my Republican friends, you'll see my point).

  The beauty of the situation though is that, even though we are a Republic (which I expect will be the main point of our promised and much anticipated civics lesson) we the people still have enough power to correct the situation in 2004. I think this last election fiasco has shown enough of the usually uninformed, easily-swayed-by-slick-ads-and-inflammatory-rhetoric voters the high cost of apathy. Let us hope that an inspirational Hero-type pops up between now and then. One who actually gives a shit.

  Fear not Englishman and all our other international friends, America will get it's shit together, enjoy the Rhetoric-Show we will be subjected to by Bushies until then.

  I agree with Englishman, and think that Bush is incompetent. They should be sure he knows what he is talking about before he is allowed to speak. I am quite sure he is nothing more than a figurehead for background 'real' leaders. But, as the figurehead, he is an embarrassment. I still can't believe he is the President.

  And the American people did NOT elect him. They elected Al Gore. It was a technicality of the antiquated electoral college, that makes him the President. I do agree that Al Gore would have been little improvement, but at least he won the popular vote.

  Just like the WTS, the America today bears little resemblance to what the founders envisioned.

  I have read these posts a few times now and, well ... what can I say.

  Just to let you know there Julie, McCain was one of the "Keating Five" involved in that little savings and loan scandel. But don't worry, you know what you are talking about.

  BTW Julie, I know this may be hard for you to believe but I know a lot of politians who do give a sh_t.

  Englishman, I think there is another reason why you don't rate him high and I don't really care.

  Commie Chris is just about right with the political angle. But I should add Chris, Gore would have done the same and blamed the republicans for the mess becuase he knew what the votes were like in the senate and he also knew what the economy was up to last year and this.

  One thing Chris, believe it or not but Republicans are for big government - but they want to enforce things they want enforced such as banning abortions, more defence spending and other things. Of course then on the other spectrum, we have socialists who want the government to do everything and in some cases that can be a problem too.

  don't forget what the left wing media did in the florida pan-handle, declaring the winner before the poles closed. bush probably would have carried that state by 100 000. the election would have been over the 1st night and nobody would care about the popular vote nation wide

  hawkaw: I agree with you that Gore is a hypocrite too. His Party is owned by the same multi-national corporations that own the Republicans. Both U.S. Parties serve the interests of their owners and both parties are all for "big government" when it serves the intersts of those corporations. The difference is only one of minor degrees. However I do not agree with you about socialists wanting government to "do everything". In my view real socialism is libertarian socialism, not the phony big government "socialism" of social democrats and liberals. See my explanation under the My Story thread under Personal Experiences.
