A newbie's impression on this board, pros and cons

  I posted this in another [ edited to include link ] recent thread:

  'smelly onions' poster that recently registered to the forum. He states he is inactive, yet still praises the professed virtues of the WTS. None here would classify him, as I'm sure his elders too, as the clear definition of an apostate as Alan and Farkel state above. Why?

  Because it is clear he does not oppose. And he knows it. He is well aware that if he does not show signs of "going apostate" he is safe, for now. The policy of shunning is not a worry for him, now.

  I have my own personal feelings and thoughts about these types of jws. I will keep it that way.

  You probably were on the fringes of the organization for it to have affected you. Good for you. And thanks for the free advice. Don't let the door smack you to hard on the way out.

  Smelly, For those that were (no offense, but you alluded to it yourself) half-ass witnesses, the WT organization never seems all that BAD (or all that good.) However, many on this board, myself included, were pioneers, servants, elders, bethelites, etc. So we invested a lot into the organization only to find out that much of what we were taught was false. I agree with you that due to bitterness many may tend to villianize the WT...however that does not mean the bitterness is not warranted. I also agree about personal responsibility and not placing blame on other people for your decisions, but as already pointed out, many have been wronged against their will. Whether or not the WT is a cult can often be an argument about semantics. But it is undeniable that the WT attempts to control what its members think, say and do. And they definitely attempt to control what information they take in (hence not allowed to read other religous or "apostate" literature.) Call it brain-washing, thought control, information control, whatever. It certainly is not an environment that encourages personal reasoning (despite their use of that word) or critical thinking, which makes a very powerful and dangerous entity. I hope you stick around this board long enough to enjoy some of the gems that are posted...they are scattered here and there, but worth the effort once found.

  I have two 1st cousins Raped and Molested by my Mothers Brother. Oh by the way Elder's knew about it and said too much time went on and to leave it in Jehovah's hands. My Father Molested By his Uncle. Then my other 1st cousin raped and molested by a 17 year old Elder's Son. He admitted it and laughed in my uncles face. Nothing happened to him because his Daddy paid off the congregation with a nice fat check every month.All Facts! Ummm My Aunt was shunned after getting married to a "Worldly Man" even though she went to all meetings took her children there as well...she basically had it when they still shunned her when her baby died.Then there was the whole I couldn't get baptized thing because the Elder's in my congregation hated my grandparents for having Money. By the way this is not all in my head and hear say. Anyway I could not be baptized because of my Family. Well I still kept on trying. God this is story will take forever......

  Disfellowshipping is a great thing at least IMO.

  I have nothing wrong with the scriptural encouragement to shun hypocritical wrongdoers. However, the WT arrangement of DICTATING to everyone who they should shun and who they should forgive is not only unscriptural, but ethically wrong. According to their arrangement, families are torn apart simply because one member thinks differently. They don't even have to do anything wrong, JUST THINK DIFFERENTLY AND THEY CAN BE TREATED AS THEY ARE DEAD. I don't see how that can ever be construed as a great thing.

  The problem with still-head-in-the-clouds witnesses like this guy is that they don't understand the real problem. It's not so much about the kids that have been molested, or the people who have died from lack of a blood transfusion, as sad as that is. It's about the hundred of thousands...perhaps millions...of lives the WTBTS has fucked up. The good decent folks who have been strangled and choked by their rigid rules and regulations, their practice of shunning and their deceitful teachings. This guy's 2nd post on the board was, in essence, to tell us we're all a bunch of crybabies. He's a piece of shit in my book
