Last summer I was flying back to California from the east coast, and in the middle states, there was the wildest thunderstorm I have ever seen. There was actually two of them, and you could see very clearly. Awesome to see, didn't want to be anywhere near it though, so I was glad we turned away from it all. But from up in the sky, and see a storm where the lightening struck every couple of seconds....wow.

The safest place would be on the roof holding an umbrella in one hand and a ground wire in the other hand. If that is not possible, then try taking a showing while talking on the phone.

I don't think there has been a single incidence of someone being struck while on a roof repairing a television antenna. It would be prudent for you to purchase one and install it during an electrical storm.

Don't know if the 'john' is the best place to be during a lightning strike, the porcelain gods not going to earth the bolt, it's more likely to fry your bum when the water gets live! If you're gonna hang out in there, make sure you're wearing thick rubber boots:))

I live in Arizona where we have huge storms with lots of lightening. Many times during the monsoons we get warnings to shut all electrical items off, or better yet to unplug them all. I have heard many times over the years where people have lost large ticket items due to lightening strikes. Computers, t.v.'s, etc.

If things are bad enough they warn to get to the middle of your home away from windows in case they implode. I would not suggest the toilet, LOL. Maybe you can go to the center of your home with a bucket, but stay away from water sources. The electricity follows the path of least resistance, which is many times water. A couple of years ago, right here where I live, a man was killed while filling his dishwasher. The lightening struck and it followed the water source right up to him. This means no baths, showers, etc.

Oh, and stay off telephones that are hooked by a wire to the wall. If you MUST use a phone use a cell or a cordless as the electricity can follow the line in from outside. About 10 years ago our phones went dead during a storm. We had the phone company come out and he said it was a good thing no one was on the phone during the storm because our phone box got a direct hit and burned out and that it would have seriously hurt/killed whoever was on the phone at the time.

Never, never seek refuge under a tree. It acts like a lightening rod. If you are caught outside during a lightening storm and need to go inside for cover NEVER, NEVER, NEVER run! A few years ago a group here were hit and a young family with children died. Running causes friction that causes static.

I know, I sound serious. I am! I have heard of too many horror stories here regarding lightening to be anything but...

About a fortnight ago, we had a quite a few thunderstorms in England. During one I was walking over the top of the Worcestershire Hills, and I remembered being told that a woman had been struck (while out walking) and pinned to a tree by her underwired bra. Well, did I remove THAT in a hurry, or what?

dh has got the correct answer surely. The best place to be in a storm is in a plane flying above it...

I know it's not the safest place (I have often been told!) but my favorite place is still right in the middle of a good storm...

When I was a kid I would climb my favorite pine tree as close to the top as possible and let the wind whip me back and forth and the rain soak me and the lightning dance around me...

Umbrella? I don't need no stinking umbrella

Crazy? Me? What makes you think so?
