How many here sew? I am finishing a long satin skirt and will start on a long asian influenced dress today. This is for a Mary Kay convention I will be attending next week. Are there any other sewers on board?

Yup. But I haven't done so in a long time. I like to design my own clothes at times, cause I hate buying "cloned clothes" off the rack. This way I get the color and style I want.

I also design crocheted sweaters, etc. Novelty designs that you don't see on a shelf in a department store. However, I've lately seen one of my designs from 5 yrs ago in a sweater sold on the internet.

I do tapestry - makes me feel like I'm doing something while I watch tv. Then I make it into cushions - takes me about 3 years to complete each tapestry - so maybe I'm just not watching the tv enough!

I'm a novelty sewer. I took an evening class last year & was able to make about 7 dresses using the same basic pattern (sleeveless). I was very proud of myself. But I haven't been able to sew at all this year. I hope to take the machine out of storage & begin again.

I just took my first sewing class (don't laugh fellas). I think I'm going to be the next new hot fashion designer...Watch out boys!

I can sew very simple designs. I don't have a lot of spare time to devote to it. Mostly of the hem and patch variety.

I actually had to hem a pair of capris the other day because I am, unfortunately, not very tall

I like to knit when I watch television and I used to do cross stitch quite a bit.

    I do! I do!

My gramma put a needle and thread in my hands at 2 years old. My mom put me on a machine at 4, and I made my first dress and wore it to school at 8. (brag)

If I wanted new clothes as a teen, I had to make them. My mom gladly bought fabric for me, or I bought remnants. I often would design my own clothes for assemblies, or use Vogue.

I stopped sewing so much when I started working.... time vs money.

I started up a sewing business doing outdoor gear repair 4 years ago. I morphed into making lycra bike sox for recumbent bicycles which enclosed the driver, streamlining the bike. I also did some industrial jobs, and a couple of little jobs for Nike (45 black silk drawstring bags for awards commemorating a Michael Jordan/Nike sponsored event).

But my hands, arms, shoulders, and low back hurt when I sew for more than a few minutes. So I finally gave up my business when I applied for Social Security Disability.

I still do some clothes. I've made patterns of some favorite comfy pants, and keep around patterns for the same top/dress because I like the fit.

Lately I've been into a Hawaiian quilt block.

Sewing is facinating. So much can be done when one gets outside of the basic pattern and experiments. Sometimes they don't work, but sometimes they do! I've learned to not experiment with expensive fabric......

I also like to buy fabric from Goodwill and other thrift stores. I have about 7 flap-crates of fabric. Most organized by colour. When I want something I just dig it out (when I can get to it!). I seldom pay more than $2 a yard.

Kevan, who has been a commercial carpenter for 10 years and an engineer for 20 years, finds it facinating that I can take a piece of fabric and make a 3-d article out of it with cuts and gores etc.

My last divorce I got the table saw because I knew how to use it better than Walt did. Now, Kevan uses my tablesaw, and I use his heavyduty sewing machine. (Pfaff 130-6 in a commercial table with a 1/3 hp motor!)

Yup.... I sew. I have 3 active machines - an old Janome with cams, the Pfaff, and a 5-thread Bernina serger. I have a newer Pfaff 213 but I need to adjust the tensions and do some electrical work on it.

However, I've lately seen one of my designs from 5 yrs ago in a sweater sold on the internet.

I would be very irritated by that.

I designed a "hat leash" to keep hats from blowing away while sailing. It attached to the back of a baseball cap, and hooked into the shirt. about 10 years later, Croakies - the glasses-keeper people - designed and sold something similar. I wish I had patented mine. Mine works better! I don't think copyright laws would be adequate to cover it. Oh well. I'm not in the mood to pursue it.

Brenda, you are so talented, cher! I thought I was talented in this area, but you take the cake! Oh, their designed sweater didn't bother me. It was much flimsier, didn't have the batwing sleeves and didn't have a wonderful stylin' crocheted hat to go with it...heheheh
