What I really celebrate therefore is the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ and hence people know it as Easter which in fact is not. But to cut a long story short yes Easter is pagan but around that time Jesus' resurrection is celebrated.

What a stupid thread. Talk about much ado about nothing.
Worth summarizing the important points made by others above.
1. Christmas as a traditional celebration has nothing to do with Jesus Christ and it is entirely pagan in orgin, in traditions and things which are associated with it.
2. "Xmas" is NOT "crossing out" the name of Christ. It is an ACCEPTED alternative form of the name Christ.
Fe03girl said it several times but sometimes it takes a man to say something for others to hear it, so I will repeat it:
(From Answers.com)
X·mas (kris'm?s, eks'm?s)
n.
Christmas.
[From X , the Greek letter chi, first letter of Greek Khristos , Christ. See Christ.]
USAGE NOTE Xmas has been used for hundreds of years in religious writing, where the X represents a Greek chi, the first letter of ???st??, “Christ.” In this use it is parallel to other forms like Xtian, “Christian.” But people unaware of the Greek origin of this X often mistakenly interpret Xmas as an informal shortening pronounced (eks'm?s). Many therefore frown upon the term Xmas because it seems to them a commercial convenience that omits Christ from Christmas.
3. Using the alternative form of Xmas instead of Christmas does nothing and indeed could never take away from the glory of Christ Jesus and to view that it somehow does is simply a warped interpretation of reality.
4. Its August for Christ's sake! Let us enjoy the rest of our Summer with all its scantily clad wearing, oiled supple bodies glistening, nude sleeping, moonlight-dipping, late-night dancing, vodka on the rocks drinking good times before turning our attention to the frozen tomb of December please!

Again, you are dancing, Hibiscus...
Your post only underlines what we have been saying about Easter, but you refuse to answer the question specifically. We don't need you to describe the history of Easter. We are asking you why you have no problem using the word "Easter" to refer to this Christian holiday. You have taken exception to any description of Christian that "takes Christ out of Christmas." Certainly using the word "Easter," which is the name of a pagan goddess must also fill you with righteous indignation. No? Hmmm... Satan has really fooled you, hasn't he? Tsk, tsk tsk...
Oroborus:
The truth is the Catholics screwed up everything!!! They changed the calendar they changed everything. They wanted fame at all cost. The true meanings of Christmas and Easter is about Jesus...but they incorporated the pagan festival for people who don't know better.

We need an emoticon of a smiley face eating popcorn....
cause the shows just starting...

As I said before I was discussing Christmas and Xing out Christ's name...Easter as I SAID BEFORE is another topic in itself!!!
You don't understand english very well do you?

Which you were proved wrong on...can you at least admit that?
If you must insist....though I don't want to discuss Easter here:
Even though the Jewish passover was held in mid April (the fourteenth) and the pagan festival Easter was held later the same month, how do we know that Herod was referring to Easter in Acts 12:4 and not the Jewish passover?
If he was referring to the passover, the translation of "pascha" as "Easter" is incorrect. If he was indeed referring to the pagan holyday (holiday) Easter, then the King James Bible (1611) must truly be the very word and words of God for it is the only Bible in print today which has the correct reading.

They changed the calendar they changed everything.
Yeah. The real Christmas is in January, when the Ukrainians celebrate it.

Seriously Hib, why do you care what i or anyone else on this board does? you celebrate it the way you want, and i will celebrate it the way i want. hence the term 'to each his own'
I don't beleive in Jesus or anything to do with religion for that matter, but i do celebrate xmas because its fun, and i like spending hundreds of dollors on toys, and we like spending time as a family, i like lights and decorations. Its different for everyone.
You are making too much of this.. really.
