I left long before I was aware of sites like this, before I even owned a computer. I just decided I no longer belonged in the WTBTS, and gradually tapered off in meeting attendance. The fact that I was taking evening classes helped a LOT, as I had a genuine excuse for not being present Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Eventually, I stopped attending the Sunday meeting as well, then I moved and mostly forgot those people.

by minimus inclearly, the internet and sites like this one helped get me out.

Life on the doors now
by wherehasmyhairgone inthe last time i went on the field service was around the very early 90's.
i have a genuine question for any jw that are active in the door to door work still.. i lived for finding the person that wanted to debate things, i would always be the one to call on the local atheist, vicar, etc etc.
and would hammer home all that was had learnt and research myself with the wts literature of course.

Regarding the "a house cannot build itself" illustration, my response would be "houses are neither alive nor organic, but simply a constructed thing" followed by "organic, living beings build themselves every day, this is part of the definition of life".

Did Jesus really die on a cross?
by moomanchu inbelieve it or not this was the very very begining of my demise as a dub.. i picked the simplest thing that dubs disagree with christians on and i thought surely i could come to a conclusion as to wether dubs were right or christendom was right.i wanted to start building my foundation of faith in them.. i can't believe they are still using this stupid illustration of the loved one murdered by the weapon illustration!.
idiots, jesus wasn't murdered he gave his life ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
they have this on their site.. http://www.watchtower.org/e/200604a/article_01.htm.

Someone reviewing the film "The Wicker Man" (the original, not the newer version) on Amazon asked a good question, essentially: "If people believed that a man had burned inside a large wicker man, as in the movie, and that this act somehow cleansed us of our sins, would believers wear images of the wicker man as jewelry?" I'm thinking they might.

by drew sagan inand i'm not talkng about historical referances, bible quotes, and those sorts of things.

Observed something similar during 2001-2002 on the About forum for Alternative Religion. A poster who called herself "Irene" began posting various things which were obviously cut-and-pasted from a Watchtower CD. She claimed that they were her own composition based on her "research" (you could SEE the paragraph numbers from the CD in her posts). Some identified her although she refused to admit she was a JW, she admitted to preferring the NWT, and all her beliefs were precisely in line with WTBTS teachings. Eventually, she was asked too many questions which she could not give credible answers to, and gave up.

I saw The Prestige recently, and was describing it to a JW I know. When he heard it was about two magicians, he immediately interrupted and said "I wouldn't be interested in a movie about magic". I explained that it is not about "magic" but about two magicians, i.e. stage performers who use sleight of hand to create an illusion. He just said something about "The Bible makes it clear that magic is not for Christians". So, I suppose he thinks that if someone pulls a rabbit out of a hat, beware, they probably are demonized.

And don't forget, since the wages of sin are death, almost everyone who has EVER lived will be raised back up to have another chance at life. Whatever they did in their previous life is wiped away because THEY ALREADY DIED and paid for those sins, so now they get another chance with a clean slate. Estimates for total human population are in the range of 10-20 Billion people, or more. Imagine 20 Billion people (3 times the current population), without electricity or running water, trying to grow vegetables and build houses. At least there would be plenty of fertilizer. (Ewwww!)

Dinosaurs! How were they explained (away)?
by DeusMauzzim indinosaurs are a bit of an embarrassment for the watchtower.

Hmm, that picture appears to be edited. I remember another version which clearly shows the head of a Tyrannosaurus. I remember also thinking how stupidly they drew it, as the creature had its mouth pointed down, as if it were drinking, not up, as if it were gasping for air. The image looked exactly as if someone had traced one of Charles Knights famous dinosaur paintings of a Tyrannosaur directly onto the "flood" image.

Here is the exact quote I was trying to recall earlier. This takes place in the scene inside the Mines of Moria, immediately after Frodo discovers Gollum is following them. Frodo: It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill him when he had the chance. Gandalf: Pity? It is pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death and judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet for good or ill before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn't. I don't care about the alleged "pagan origins", no doubt other cultures used crosses for various meanings. However, in Western culture, wearing a cross implies that the wearer buys into the whole "original sin/ransom sacrifice" idea, and I don't. I don't view myself, or anyone else, as products of a "fallen race" of humans. I have no inborn sin because of something my ancestors did. No one died for my sins, because no one needed to. The only "sin" possible is when you use your free will to bring harm to someone else.
