They call themselves christians because thats what the book of Acts called the followers of Christ. They use the name when it suits them but deny any connection the rest of the time. For instance, when calling door to door they say they are calling on behalf of a 'Christian Ministry' without mentioning who they really are. Perhaps an attempt to deceive others about who they are at first or maybe just to surprise people who thought they were going to say they were JWs. Who knows. But when asked if they are Christians they clasify it as Jehovah's Witnesses-- a name derived from Isaiah 43:10 which is actually being used of the Jews who witnessed God's miracles at that time-- and separate themselves from "christendom".
They are not, by any means, true Christians as the outlined faith in Christ of the Bible. Jesus said many would come in his name but do not be deceived.
Definitely study the Bible for truth and you will find it

Why do they call themselves Christians?
by KistByQpid ini am not trying to be sarcastic.
however, it just doesn't make sense to me.
if a christian is one who "follows christ" how does that apply to the jw's?

Hi collegegirl & welcome!
Hope you enjoy making friends and learning some interesting stuff here on the board
I am 22 & happily married with a great 1 year old baby. Life outside the WT is great-- I am a christian now and very happy.
Just to encourage you if you need it, I left the JWs when I was only 15--so don't let them look down on you because you are young. They'll learn-- and learn fast that us youngins are smarter than they give us credit for. Welcome & nice to meet ya

Which bible Translation is best?
by NikL inthis one is for those on this board that continue to read the bible.
i know there are many on here that dont.
i still do, though not very often, and i dont accept everything written as straight from the mouth of god.. one thing i discovered after leaving the witnesses was that the bible is actually an interesting document and not some terribly difficult tome that must be explained every step of the way.

Nice accent there , Shimmer.
To anyone in general, If you need a Bible, email me and I'll send you one free of charge .
(Bit of Info, NIV translators came from US, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, & New Zealand and from denominations such as:
Anglican, Assemblies of God, Baptist, Brethren, Christian Reformed, Church of Christ, Evangelical Free, Lutheran, Mennonite, Methodist, Nazarene, Presbyterian, Wesleyan, etc... to safegaurd against sectarian bias. The main diferance from a Catholic Bible is not the translation but the inclusion of the Apocrypha in the Catholic Bibles. While the apocrypha is historical it is not held as scripture by the protestants.) -

This proves it is true!
by ChuckD ini just read this on www.randi.org, and though it interesting;.
reader joe ridgel sends me this hypothetical exchange, which i'd not seen before, between one (c) who argues that the accounts in the bible prove christian claims to be true, and another (d) who disputes that premise.
d: was there a road named route 66?

I would wonder then if the Grapes of Wrath also:
Prophesies the future with not a single mistake yet over thousands of years;
*If it includes historical accounts of real people proven accurate through historical and archeological findings;
*If it includes scientific, archeological and historical statements the author could not have independantly known apart from inspiration from a all knowing source, God;
*If it claimed to be a historical non-fiction work;
*If it claimed inspiration from God;
*Has the same God active in and changing peoples lives still today after being written thousands of years ago.
etc.....
No?
Then it does not enter even close to the same league as the Bible.

I'm new here
by konkreetgurl inhey everybody, i'm a christian, but i'm not a jehovah's witness and i recently made friends with one, i know little to nothing about this religion and i would like to know more, can anyone help me out by way of how it is different from say, an evangelical free christian church?
and what sort of theology and doctrine jw's go by and such, i'd really appreciate it, thank you

Hi Konkreetgurl!
Nice to meet you
I myself am a christian now, had been a JW while in High school.
I left the JWs after some christian friends of mine urged me to study the Bible on my own, apart from Watchtower literature. I became a believer at that time. JWs are very different than Christians. They claim to be the true Christians though. The best thing I can say is always study and read the Bible yourself-- don't take anyones word for what it is saying! Please e-mail me to talk about this if you'd like-- I have spoken with many JWs and have researched my faith and theirs in depth. Our God is awesome !

Watchtower Letter
by JosephAlward ini received a letter today from the watchtower explaining their reasons for registering with the dpi.
the last paragraph is perhaps the most interesting, though it may contain no new information.. .
joseph f. alward.

C"hristian Congregation" my foot. I guess they needed a more nuetral, less scary name to call themselves. Where did the Watchtower BTS go? That's usually the letterhead I've recieved.
Yes, they are weasels that got caught....again....
They always think they can hide their political compromises but it never works. -

Did The Generation Change Silence Apostates?
by Englishman inhere is a paragraph from the1997 august 1st.watchtower re the generation change:.
"recently, 'the faithful and discreet slave' has helped us to refine our understanding of the term 'generation' used at matthew 24:34 and of the timing of the judgment of 'the sheep' and 'the goats' mentioned at matthew 25:31-46, as well as of our view toward certain types of civilian service.
no doubt some apostates would have been delighted if many of jehovah's witnesses had stuck rigidly to the previous understanding of such subjects and refused to progress.

Why should anyone believe them right now-- the light will only be brighter a few years down the road & it won't be the same anyway
Yuck. -

Personal Favorite is NIV.
It's very literal and easy to read.
(It's also good that it was translated by over 100 scholars working together that come from all the denominations so it's likely to be unbiased.)I do own and read occasionally KJV, NRSV, NLT, CRV, yatta, yatta
I also have and use in research an interlinear hebrew/greek Bible just to see what the original says to make sure it matches translation. Slight overkill?We all know which is one of the least reliable translations NWT

I GIVE UP...............
by ThiChi ini give up!!.
after the post regarding the "jw fact sheet" and all the good, damming info there, i would like to share this:.
a good jw friend visited me in the cover of darkness last night to say hello (i am da).
-
Adonai438
Under the cover of darkness huh? Sounds like Nicodemus visiting Jesus to me. Don't worry Thi Chi, you're not Jesus .
I find that many JWs are JWs for the wrong reason and thats why reason and evidence doesn't work with them. If a person loves God and that is their utmost allegience then they will listen to real information and not feel threatened because the truth means something to them. If a person is in it for any other reason, evidence gets you nowhere, it seems. They have no reason to change. Sad but true. -

FAITHandREASON R they compatible
by plmkrzy inwell ok here tiz,.
the april 1st wt came in the mail today.. topic on page 1:.
"should faith be based on reasoning?".
-
Adonai438
Thought these quotes were appropriate on the subject:
Now, since the Lord has invited us to "reason together", no man can reason unless he puts aside prejudice. Neither should any man permit any one else to do his thinking, whether that man be a rabbi or preacher. (Life; 1929; 1,000,000 ed.; pp. 210)
Straight from the GB themselves! Do they mean it?:And what if a different view about some belief is presented to you? Loyally adhere to the Scriptural information provided by God through "the faithful and discreet slave." (The Watchtower; 11/15/1989; pp. 17)
AHHHHHHH! There it is! Don't really reason or be logical. Just do as you're told.Faith is in reality compatible with reason but as in regards to JW doctrine and teaching etc.. it doesn't work. One has to consider fact and reason and stick to the results otherwise the principle means nothing.
