Interesting. My BIL who lives near Dumfries, has also begun to learn Gaelic together with his wife. He gave us a few examples of sentence formation and methods of addressing one another which I found intriguing.

Languages, Dialects, Accents
by LoveUniHateExams injust though i'd start a thread devoted to languages, dialects/sociolects and accents, with the idea being that posters can comment on any language, or dialect or accent of any language, on this thread.. any phrases, expressions or idioms that you find interesting are also welcome.
first, the subject of english accents came up on another thread.. the british isles have many different types of accent (although many of the dialects may be dying out), and if i start to take a closer look, i can't help but see 'patterns' .... in received pronunciation of standard english, the letter r is pronounced initially, between vowels, and after consonants, e.g.
red, arrow, break.

After the death of a spouse, how long did people wait to get remarried?
by RubaDub ini was on the phone with a long-time friend from my original congregation north of new york city and she told me that the 'shit hit the fan' when a brother (long-time elder i know well) got remarried about 6 weeks after his wife died.. he was about 60 and his new wife (a pioneer that i also know) was about 50 and had never been married.. it became a huge issue when the co came.
due to all the talk and chatter in the congregation, he even included in one of his talks without naming names, that marriage is something sacred and that when and how people get married is a personal matter as long as it conforms to bible standards.. anyway, it shut everybody up.
any similar experiences in your current/former congregations?.

From what I've seen of some families, it can be the grown-up children that can cause problems for a bereaved parent who wants to re-marry. Plaintive yelps of "What about our memories of Mum" are often the response to a widowed father who's maybe spent years alone before he's able to form a new relationship.
My lady and I have made it plain to all our children that neither of us wishes for the surviving partner to remain in enforced loneliness for the rest of their life. And we're both OK with that.

Imagine if the US had followed that advice when Europe was in turmoil in the 20th century.
The UK was already winning the war in the air by the time the USA joined in and got over here. Just a few months after Pearl Harbour, the UK was dispatching 1000 bomber raids over Germany, none of them from the US. The USA didn't win the war - but they certainly shortened the proceedings.

Which songs give you goosebumps?
by LoveUniHateExams ini don't know if this topic has been covered before - it might 've been.. i also recommend flipper's excellent music thread ('what songs have you been listening to?
', or similar).. but, i'd just like to start a thread about certain songs giving me goosebumps.
y'know, when you hear a song that profoundly effects you in some difficult-to-describe way and the hairs on your arm stand on end even though the room temperature's comfortably warm.. so, which songs give you goosebumps?.

This one. Made a decision that the dubbies were wrong. The following week I went to a folk club with about a dozen other ex's. We found ourselves singing along to this one. I've loved it ever since. I'm just about able to strum it after several pints of Butcombe Gold.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSEmFvuUXWk&fbclid=IwAR2aDU-d5O53seJ9W7qNIOjB7xwEWWOXhAlqVO8KRzoZt_PG_h4FslBVY-A

by goingthruthemotions inso i am trying to understand if i am the only pomo that experiences the situation where the pimi spouse comes back from a meeting a different personanlity.
it may not be obivious to the untrained eye, but i notice it and i know my sons notice it.
this last round after all the loyalty bs and armagedon bs it's like she has stayed stuck in it.

I get the same silly glow after I've been to watch my favourite football team. Especially if they've won..

'Jehovah's Witnesses' Label Added to Trolley
by cofty inyesterday i noticed on four trolleys i passed (and had a long useful conversation at one but more on that later) they had added a label identifying themselves as jehovah's witnesses.
it was just a simple printed piece of white card stuck on next the logo.. is this a new requirement?
was it a directive from hq or i wonder if the local council require it..

Just curious ...do the dubbies need to obtain permission from their local council before siting their carts? We've had one for a while in my local town centre. It's always in the same spot and manned by 3 people. I know that they never approach passers by - is this part of the deal also?

pope benedict & pope francis.

Pope Benedict wanted to retire as pope. So did Francis as an archbishop, only many years earlier than most archbishops, whose normal retirement age was 75. Francis and Benedict had vastly different ideas on the way the church should go. Benedict was concerned that if Francis retired before him it would look as though Francis had retired in protest at Benedict's papacy. So he was summoned from Argentina to Rome for further discussions. The film is basically about the relationship between the 2 men and is, IMHO, well worth viewing.
