  So How Does a Place Become A City In England?

  well, it has to have a cathedral in order to have city status.. the nearest city to weston s mare is the city of wells, about 35 minutes drive from here.. but, wells has a population of only 10,000 or so, one seventh that of wsm which is still rated as just a town.. wells is also the smallest city in england.

  we've taken a few people there to visit, the last was joy and steve who both post here.

  we visited there today with our nieces, here's some pics.

  It 's the Queens decision...I was in Wells the other day..it has a lovely chocolate shop.....the Bishops Palace is beautiful..loved the swans,,,

  Updated 14 March 2002, 16.43 Stirling Castle Five towns have become cities to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee. Becoming a city doesn't give the town any extra powers, but it's a huge honour. Only 17 towns were made into cities in the whole of the last century. Newport The lucky five beat off stiff competition from 37 other towns who all tried to prove they were worthy of city status. The five are: Preston in north west England Newport in Wales Stirling in Scotland Lisburn in Northern Ireland Newry in Northern Ireland The Queen decided on the five after looking at things like history of the town, important features, areas of national importance and a "forward-looking attitude". She made her decision with help from some top ministers. Who missed out? The other 37 towns who didn't get made into cities are: England: Blackburn with Darwen, Blackpool, Bolton, Chelmsford, Colchester, Croydon, Doncaster, Dover, Greenwich, Guildford, Ipswich, Luton, Maidstone, Medway, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Northampton, Reading, Shrewsbury and Atcham, Southend-on-Sea, Stockport, Swindon, Telford, Warrington, Wirral. Wales: Aberystwyth, Machynlleth, Newtown, St Asaph, Wrexham. Scotland: Ayr, Dumfries, Paisley. Northern Ireland: Ballymena, Carrickfergus, Coleraine and Craigavon.

  having to be segregated in a special baby room at the back of the hall with huge windows at the front to breastfeed your baby...for a better view for those on the platform perhaps...

  soledad, yeah we had the tampon 'rule' too...no tampon pic Si?

  ...no music in your car on the way to meetings was a good one...and making sure your car was always hoovered and washed...:s..life's too short, surely?

  oh, and on no account try to occupy and play with bored babies in the row in front of you..it'll stop them 'learning' to sit still..and get you a stern look from the mother....

  ..but the best one was when I was told not to grow poppies anymore as it was illegal(??!!) and people would think i was a drug addict..yep-it was mentioned from the platform too ...lmao

  im going to see it tomorrow Mike; I wanted to see it but was worried it'd be awful- was only going for the horse fest....i'm really looking forward to it now.....

  'Bend it' was so good.but as my son's obsessed with Pirates of the Caribean i'm a bit sick of her...he thinks she looks permenantly constipated incedently lol.....

  Man's Responsibility vs God's Sovereignty

  the predestination that Calvinism advocates,thus creating this paradox is my personnal proof that the answers we look for cant be found within the information we're given, perhaps that's the point of all the confusion?

  If I have a view then I tend to lean towards the theory that we are supposed to create our own views and that we are being steered in the direction of hopefully realising that we have to reject following someone and perhaps leave god to find peace...using the information he's given us to move away from him and to take responsibility for our lives using the information given but by reworking it for ourselves, as a parent would do for a child.

  Sad news...

  i had a fantastic holiday in florida with some good friends back in 2000 - 3 couples and a single lass.

  the link below to the news story was the seventh member of our party.. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/nottinghamshire/3539662.stm.

  feels really weird - was looking through some video footage of the holiday to try and get some extra pictures of her, for her best friend.. what could possibly have been going through his mind when he did this ??

  (((((Bull)))) so sorry to hear you knew them...Ive just been reading about this in the paper..poor girl, it's a terrible tradgedy....the piece inferred how close he and his daughter were...sometimes life events can make people act with blind rage and temporary insanity.Such a sad situation.

  As for the wedding video, I cant begin to imagine just how dreadful that must've been for the groom.

  Do All JW Children Suffer From Psychological Damage? The First Bit..

  ..and if so, what form does such psychological damage take?.

  my own experience is that damage does occur.. i was 8 years old when my parents became converted, so i wasn't exactly a totally white canvass on which my personality could be painted.

  but i was a light shade of grey, so the impact of wt teaching was still quite considerable.. i think the most damage that i suffered was in the area of guilt and unworthiness.

  I'd never have thought that the young Mike and you were the same person...you should be pretty proud of yourself after starting life with such a stressful set of compounding guilt complexes..

  I was brought up Cathloic, then Methodist, then LONG break then JW.Perhaps the origional Catholicism effected the decision to have a bible study later in life..There is a whole 'group' mentality with the Catholics and also rigid dictrinal issues and allegiance to the body as a whole and the infalibility of the Pope could be likened to that of the Governing Body..I certainly think guilt reinforced even more strongly by the WTBS had an effect on me..

  ...and if so, what psychological damage does that take?

  I feel that another aspect of psychological damage from the WTBS is the failure of some teenagers to grow into well rounded individuals.

  There was a psycholocist on radio4 last year who defined a group of children as being likely to suffer mental problems later in life.

  She argued that teenagers have to be allowed to make their own decisions and more importantly mistakes, to develop correctly .

  She explained that this was because the process of decision making is a learned skill that needs to be encouraged and developed and that children denied this due to a rigid set of rules-and she specified strict religious upbringings..are less able to cope when older that children from a supportive background who knew their parents views, but had been allowed the freedom to choose their own standards, suffered less from psychological damage and were well balanced adults...

  This really made me think.

  I am happy with myself and my own company and happy with my social network... i'm quietly confident about my abilities to cope with anything and never contemplate failure as an option...

  ....having said that; perhaps negative interactions with others affect me too deeply and I would like to be able not to let my selfesteem be lowered by others' behaviour towards me.

  I do know that i'm an eternal optimist, though I would like to have a stable,strong, loving, relationship as a basis to strike off from but, hey... if I dont, i'll live.
